Studio Industrial light & magic (ILM) published a video on the analysis of special effects that were created for the series John Favreau and Dave Filoni “Mandaloretz“. The focus is on building digital film sets.
Exclusive Disney + became a breakthrough work, because it was run on a technology that is based on capabilities Unreal engine 4. Joining forces, ILM and Epic games created a system that projects a rendered backdrop onto a wall.
The technology allows actors to feel more comfortable on set and adapt to the context, as they no longer have to deal with a green screen. In addition, lighting is also adjusted to the scene (LED screens are used), which facilitates the work of VFX specialists at the post-production stage.
The operator also wins, as it is possible to choose a better angle. For example, the exact moment for shooting a sunset. In one day, the team can shoot a scene in the desert, and then quickly switch to a snow location. The digital scene also takes into account the movement of the camera in space, correctly updating the backdrop in the desired area.
As director John Favreau pointed out, at the end of the development, the film crew was in full swing into experiments, creating more and more complex locations. For example, a hangar in which there is a spaceship of the protagonist, having a mirror surface.
About 50% of the series “Mandalorets” was shot on the digital stage.
