Network users drew attention to changes in the provision of user content on the official website Blizzard entertainment. It turned out that January 21, a week before the release Warcraft III: Reforged the company made changes to it.
The site says that the rights to all work created by users in Blizzard games, including maps, belong exclusively to the publisher.
“Custom games are and must remain Blizzard’s inseparable and exclusive property.. Without limiting the foregoing, you hereby assign to Blizzard all your full ownership rights and other rights, as well as ownership interests in all User Games, including but not limited to all copyrights to the content of all User Games. If for any reason you cannot assign or are limited in the assignment of any rights to Blizzard User Games, you grant Blizzard an exclusive, perpetual, worldwide, unconditional, royalty-free and non-revocable license to enable Blizzard to fully utilize Custom games (or any of their components) for any purpose and in any way. You also agree that if Blizzard deems it necessary, you will make any concessions and / or transmit the relevant documents immediately after receiving such a request from Blizzard in order to fulfill the intent of this paragraph. In cases where applicable laws prohibit you from transferring or assigning your moral rights to Blizzard, to the maximum extent permitted by law, you waive your moral or similar rights that you may have for all such User Games, without any reward. ” the text says.
Blizzard also notes that it can remove any custom game or card at its discretion. She also reserves the right to demand to stop the creation of an amateur project based on its development, and if a person refuses to follow the rules, then his account may be blocked.
Commercial distribution of custom games and cards based on Blizzard products is prohibited. Moreover, attempts to reproduce these developments in third-party editors and when creating separate independent games are also prohibited..
“This means that any custom game created in Warcraft III: Reforged cannot be implemented anywhere else. It also gives Blizzard the ability to close any stand-alone projects based on custom games from Reforged,” the PC Gamer notes.
In other words, if players come up with something popular or very promising in the editor of Warcraft III: Reforged, only Blizzard will be able to monetize the idea in the future. Or the authors will have to try to come to an agreement because they will have absolutely no rights.
Analysts believe that this is how the company wants to eliminate new potential market competitors. The fact is that the super popular MOBA genre has grown at one time from mods and custom maps for Warcraft III. At the same time, Valve and Riot Games brought the most money to the trend initiative, and Blizzard was left with nothing.
“The new policy suggests that if Warcraft III: Reforged comes up with the next Dota 2, Blizzard will own it and make all the profit,” the journalists write.
Warcraft III: Reforged launched on the night of January 28-29 and was severely criticized by the audience.
