In an interview with the publication USGamer studio manager Hangar 13 Hayden Blackman spoke more about the remake of the cult gangster action Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven. The main thing below:
- The idea of a remake of Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven came about three months after the completion of the last DLC for Mafia III. A small group within Hangar 13 worked on the project for a long time – a full-fledged production team was attached to the project only a year and a half ago, since the developers first needed to make sure that they laid the right foundation.
- The concept was simple: take everything that the team learned during the creation of Mafia III, including the studio’s proprietary engine, and use it to remake The City of Lost Heaven from scratch. At the same time, Hangar 13 understood that the original “Mafia” has its own hardcore fans, which greatly influenced the approach to creating the remake.
- Classic Mafia is a fairly linear story-driven game that offers a distinctive experience from all other openworld titles. With this installation, Hangar 13 had to decide what in the remake can be left unchanged, and what needs to be updated. Over the past 18 years, the level of cinematics in games has advanced significantly, so one of the things that it was decided to redo was cinematography. The process was led by Tomasz Grzebicek, who worked on the original game. The main sources of inspiration were the first two parts of The Godfather, as well as films, photographs, and music from the 1920s and 1930s.
- Sarah, Tommy’s love interest in the original game, will get more screen time. In Mafia: Definitive Edition, the girl has been working in the bar of her father Luigi for a long time and is not part of the mafia, but has an idea of how things are going on there. For Tommy, she will play a motivator in solving problems, in contrast to the more passive character that she was before. The developers also indicate that the roles of Paulie and Sam in the remake will be slightly expanded.
- The developers also adjusted and changed some missions, as well as adding new ones, so that players better feel how high the stakes are in the conflict between the criminal families of Salieri and Morello, without sacrificing the basic narrative rhythms or the meaning of the missions in history as a whole.
- Hangar 13 admits that criticism of Mafia III for similar side missions was well-founded. In the remake, the authors paid special attention to this – new tasks were added so as to avoid too many repetitions.
- The city of Lost Haven underwent a radical rethinking, as this was one of the aspects where Hangar 13 could deploy to its fullest without losing what made the original Mafia work. When designing New Bordeaux in Mafia III, the developers tried to make the players always come across something interesting. The same concept flowed into the new version of Lost Haven. The art team tried to create the most beautiful city that was possible.
- In addition to basic complexity options, Mafia: Definitive Edition will also offer settings for police presence and how they will behave in relation to violations. The game can be configured to play like the original Mafia, but it also opens the door for gamers who do not want to be distracted from the story of Tommy Angelo to sort things out with law enforcement.
- One of the major changes to Mafia: Definitive Edition is related to the gameplay – its developers transferred directly from Mafia III. The only difference is that Clay was a soldier, and Tommy was a simple taxi driver. Hangar 13 tried to catch this difference in gameplay: battles for Tommy will become much more dangerous and every bullet will matter.
- In addition to the complexity options mentioned earlier, Mafia: Definitive Edition will offer two options for driving mechanics. There will be a full-fledged driving simulation mode, as in the original, and a more affordable driving mode for those who do not like excessive hardcore. The developers also added motorcycles to the remake as a new version of vehicles, which was not in the original game.
- For Mafia: Definitive Edition, the lighting model from Mafia III was redone. It will also be used in the next Hangar 13 project.
- Despite the technical problems of the re-releases of Mafia 2 and 3, Hangar 13 does everything possible to make Mafia: Definitive Edition the best version of its favorite classic.
Mafia: Definitive Edition launches on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on Steam already August 28th.
