The first month with the PlayStation 5: Impressions of the GameMAG.ru editors from the new Sony console

Since the release Playstation 5 A month has passed, and representatives of our editorial staff would like to share their impressions of the next generation console. What you liked and what disappointed – read below.

Azamat Tegaev (Azzy)

My impressions of the PlayStation 5 are mixed so far. The console, on the one hand, offers very cool Astro’s Playroom and Demon’s Souls from the start. The first surprises with new features in the gamepad, and the second pleases with beautiful graphics. On the other hand, the new system from Sony is very crude. Players complain about a large number of problems, and often these are some kind of individual glitches that are rarely found in others.

I was more fortunate than some of the users of our forum – my PlayStation 5 does not make noise (20 dB measured in the mobile application), does not heat up and wakes up regularly. But not everything went smoothly for me either. The front USB Type-A connector did not always work correctly – it either charged or did not charge the gamepad. This was recently fixed after the second or third update. In addition, over the past month, I have encountered other problems: the console has repeatedly frozen right during the game and turned off.

After turning it on, she woke up to a black screen without any opportunity to do anything. To make it work, you had to restart it a second time with the button – in this case, the SSD restructuring process goes through and you can continue to play.

Despite the fact that this happened only a few times, I tensed, because in the event of serious problems, the service center is unlikely to be able to help very quickly.

I would also like to point out a very strange and inconvenient, in my opinion, interface. I really like the look itself with small icons, but some of its features after many years of using the PlayStation 4 are still disappointing.

Instead of installed games, the last launched ones are displayed in the main menu. This means that if you delete something, then the corresponding icon for some time will still remain on the central screen. Moreover, if you want to start a project that is not in the general menu, you will have to go to the library, and then open the “Installed” tab. Why it was necessary to break what worked on the PlayStation 4 is not entirely clear … In the library itself, not everything is all right either. There, in general, everything is dumped into one heap from all accounts on the console. It seems that this should be convenient, but no – to download the game from another account, you still need to log in to the profile where it was purchased. Then why display these games?

And such minor inconveniences are everywhere here. It seems that they did not have time to test the operating system, and now they will gradually be brought into divine form by patches.

However, having started the game, you start to enjoy the new chips like a child, and this is what smooths out all the negativity. In the early days, I almost woke up as a child and immediately ran to PlayStation 5 to play. I was very pleased with the DualSense controller and its tactile features, as well as the cleaner and more layered sound, which so far I have been able to hear only in Demon’s Souls.

Before buying the console, messages from other players enthusiastic about the new sensations seemed to me too exaggerated, but now I completely share them. Of course, it is unlikely that some of the developers will bother too much and use all the functionality of the gamepad, but judging by the interviews, the new functions really like both internal Sony studios and third-party ones, so there is a chance that many will resort to them throughout the generation. For example, already now, resisting triggers have been introduced into Borderlands 3 and the latest Call of Duty. As for the touchpad and gyroscopes, the engineers at Sony have raised the sensitivity and responsiveness of these elements. And I really hope that the panel will stop being one big button and will be actively used for interesting secondary commands in games. I also want to see an additional option in shooters that allows you to bring the crosshair to the target with a gyroscope. It would be very convenient for me.

Well, fast downloads – another forte of the PlayStation 5 – this is what I have wished for almost since the first PlayStation. The transition from one world of the Demon’s Souls remake to another in just a couple of seconds is good, which you quickly get used to and which is insanely lacking when you launch something that is not adapted for a new console. New features make you believe in a bright future for Sony.

I easily transferred to the PlayStation 5 using a flash drive saving unfinished games from PS4. This case took literally five minutes. New projects like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Watch Dogs: Legion were immediately offered to launch in PS5 versions, and the saves were uploaded via the cloud.

The new launching shell has gone to PlayStation 5 for the benefit, despite the fact that in the local library after a heap of gift games you can get confused. But the sorting process decides everything.

Conveniently, the library immediately shows games that work in PlayStation 5 mode.

The download process for games and updates is, in my opinion, faster than on the PS4 Pro. At the same time, I still have a critical error when connecting via Wi-Fi with NAT. You have to connect the set-top box via an Ethernet cable.

I also ran into the problem of the console falling asleep. If you send it to sleep mode, then when you wake up, it turns on and off, then goes into recovery mode. So, until new patches are released, I just turn off the console.

The two front outputs with USB Type-A and Type-C work great as controller charging. Moreover, I immediately replaced the standard cable with a two-meter Type-C – Type-C, bought for 300 rubles. It feels like the controller charges for about two hours, and with active play it lasts for 8-10 hours.

DualSense actively demonstrates its functionality with a variety of vibration motors in Astro’s Playroom, it feels great in Spider, Sakboy and even GodFall. The tremors, vibrations and the process of pulling the bowstring with the hammers seem rather unusual. However, at some point I even got tired of stretching the web in “Morales” and switched to the classic management format.

The overall impressions of the PlayStation 5, despite the falling asleep error and other minor bugs, are overwhelmingly positive. The console does not heat up and is as quiet as possible. Ray tracing is transforming games, and backward compatibility with PS4 hits is great. PS5 leaves a feeling of nextgen, after which it makes no sense to return to PS4 Pro. I can finish all unfinished games from the console of the outgoing generation on PlayStation 5.

Nextgen has finally arrived. We managed to live with him for several weeks and even got used to innovations a little. Especially you realize the benefits of new hardware when you return from new consoles to old ones.

For me personally, the PlayStation 5 was able to cause a real “WOW-effect” after purchase. Demon’s Souls and Spider-Man: Miles Morales amazed with new controller functions, new levels of graphics and great sound (playing Demon’s Souls with headphones is a delight). It was nice to learn the interface, which I liked even more than the interface of the PlayStation 4. But the most important thing that surprised me was how quiet the PlayStation 5 is! After a few hours of playing Cyberpunk 2077, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, or any other game … you still can’t hear it – from the word at all. I belong to the category of people who suffered incredibly from the noise of the PS4 Pro, so playing in a quiet environment on the PlayStation 5 in the new hits is just a delight. The sound of the wind outside the window is heard stronger than this console.

After the first emotions a little faded away, I tried to answer for myself the question “What is the nextgen?”. And I realized that these are complex sensations that are made up of little things. Speed is one of the most important aspects of PlayStation 5. The console starts up quickly, launches games quickly, and quickly turns them off. As a result, I began to play more often, because the time until the moment when you find yourself directly in the game has been greatly reduced.

I used to think that download speed was not the most important parameter, and I did not even understand why Sony and other companies emphasize it so much until I tried it myself.

I was also pleasantly surprised by how well the games work on the PlayStation 5. Almost the entire starter line and many projects from the “pastgen” run at 60 FPS, and sometimes at 120 frames per second. I’ve upgraded my TV to a 120Hz OLED model, and in particularly fast-paced games I really notice the difference between 60fps and 120fps. These are the new experiences you’ve come to expect from the nextgen, and the PS5 delivers them.

The DualSense controller impressed me not so much with its vibration (it’s really cool, but we already saw something similar on the Nintendo Switch), but with its adaptive triggers. This is exactly the function that I have dreamed of for a long time. I wanted to feel recoil in my finger while firing from a cannon, and now it has become possible. But the most interesting thing is how the developers use triggers not in shooters. For example, in Spider-Man, recoil is accompanied by additional sounds and vibrations with every movement of the hero.

Unfortunately, this story was not without a fly in the ointment – the gamepad of the console I bought simply did not charge. Fortunately, Sony responded quickly and fixed it for free, literally within a week.

I look forward to new games! I hope that the 60 FPS bar will now definitely become the industry standard. Emotions from the new console are still very positive.

The PlayStation 5 is the second Sony console after the PlayStation 4 that I purchase at launch. The start of the last generation, of course, was much more grandiose. We were promised (and shown) not only nextgen games and new experiences, but also a pretty powerful shift in the approach to development. “For developers”, remember? And expectations then were many times higher, largely because of this. Now there is nothing like that.

PlayStation 5 for me is not so much a new generation as an “upgrade” of the old one. My main motivation to buy was the ability to continue playing Ghost of Tsushima, but without the annoying PS4 Pro noise, with faster downloads and improved performance. Now I continue the passage, very pleased! I also wanted to evaluate the DualSense controller and its capabilities.

But I still cannot help but note that when the console was at my home, for a long time I could not get rid of the surrealism of what was happening. Until the very moment of launch, the PlayStation 5 was something fake for me, something that will come out “sometime there”, and its appearance was too unusual to represent it on the shelf at home. And then suddenly the fantasy became reality. For these emotions, I am grateful to Sony and I am ready to forgive her all the horror with a deficit.

So what else to say. I love the way the PlayStation 5 looks, I love that it is quiet and I love that it runs all my games. By the way, VR titles only work with DualShock 4, if they involve tracking a gamepad, as, for example, in the ASTRO BOT Rescue Mission – you just can’t play without the old controller (and I’ve already sold everything, that’s such a failure, so remember this ). It is also worth noting that the PlayStation VR is not compatible with the PS5 camera – you need an old one, but you just won’t be able to connect it to the new console due to the proprietary connector. Therefore, you need to fill out a special form on the Sony website, after which the company will send you a helmet adapter by mail absolutely free of charge. Thank you for this, of course, it works, but how did it happen that we had to resort to such tricks, we can only guess. Fortunately, VR games look much better on PlayStation 5, now running into the limitations of the PlayStation VR display itself.

On PlayStation 5, I managed to go through Astro’s Playroom and I must say that this is a delightful nostalgic title that not only perfectly reveals the capabilities of DualSense, but overall is a great platformer that would not be ashamed to sell at full price if made longer.

DualSense Adaptive Triggers are the main highlight of the PS5 for me. I am very happy to hear that many developers are willing to use technology in their games. A truly disruptive feature. And the vibration in the new gamepad is something completely different. It is difficult to describe the sensations, but in Astro’s Playroom it works in a unique way – something like this has not been seen anywhere before.

As for the interface, in general it is very similar to that of the PlayStation 4. The only negative point I would call a little more difficult access to the settings, which were hidden a little further, and now you need to make a few extra “clicks” before the coveted gear. I’m also not very happy with the new menu with cards, which is called up from everywhere by pressing the PS button, but mostly because I have little to do with prizes. Although this will be a very convenient way for trophy hunters to quickly check the progress (In Astro’s Playroom, for the sake of interest, I collected the missed collectibles, using the built-in guides – it’s very convenient, but this, of course, is cheating, so don’t!).

Despite the gamepad, the console doesn’t feel too “new” yet. Perhaps I need to play Miles Morales to see the ray tracing firsthand, or Demon’s Souls to appreciate the truly nextgen graphics, but I’m very happy with the purchase anyway. Although the PlayStation 5 now has very little to offer as a new generation, I am sure that everything is ahead (we are waiting for the nextgen patch for Cyberpunk 2077), but for now, you can brighten up the wait by at least playing games with the PlayStation 4 with much more comfort.

A new generation has come. Over the past couple of months, I was lucky enough to get acquainted not only with the PlayStation 5, but also with new video cards from NVIDIA, as well as consoles from Sony’s direct competitor, Microsoft. And unlike the latter, due to the pre-New Year’s workload, it was not always possible to get down to the new console from the Japanese corporation, but some impressions have already formed.

Of course, the first thing that catches your eye is the sheer size of the PlayStation 5! I immediately compared it with PS3, PS4 Pro and Xbox Series X. Here the new “tower” is beyond competition. It didn’t fit on my shared console shelf, but it looks good on the windowsill. Now in the morning it’s funny to watch the PlayStation 5 together with my cat sadly look out the window at the snowy yard. But for the glossy part in the middle, I want to throw obscene language at the one who came up with such a design decision. For the third generation, Sony is releasing a console with a surface that spoils the look of the body in a short time. If only they covered it with a film at the factory, otherwise the scratches are guaranteed.

Of the pleasant moments, the new DualSense controller can be distinguished, or rather its ergonomics. Grab and peachesthe texture of the new joystick has become much nicer, and it also gained weight. And in this regard, it has become more like a controller from Microsoft, which, in my opinion, is good. The DualShock 4 seems like a cheap toy compared to DualSense.

So far, I have only managed to feel the main feature of the gamepad in Astro’s Playroom. But I will say that the vibration sensations periodically made me feel déjà vu. For example, the moment with the astrobots “inside” the joystick resembled the effect with iron balls from the 1-2 Switch game for Nintendo Switch. It was later revealed that Sony was developing the DualSense haptic feedback system with the same company that Nintendo was working with on HD vibration for the Joy-Con. The function is quite interesting, but only time will tell whether it will be actively used in serious projects throughout the generation.

In the new “Spider-Man”, which I already managed to go through, during the gameplay I did not feel any memorable tactile effects – I can only note a slight vibration effect and a sound coming from the joystick while traveling around the city on the web. More noticeable vibration was found only in cutscenes.

In Demon’s Souls, for which I have spent a little time so far, from the effects I noticed only the recoil when a cold weapon hits the surface and the corresponding sounds from the controller’s dynamics, but this did not cause any vivid impressions.

The new console interface looks nice, and the digital PS Store now loads very quickly, which is a big plus, although, I admit, I did not immediately find the section with discounts.

I didn’t like that, unlike the PlayStation 4, you cannot create folders on the new console and thus sort the installed projects the way you want.

Tiles are displayed in the order of last application activity, and not all. Games that have not been launched for a long time are not highlighted on the main, but are available in the library – the rightmost tile. However, not everything is in order here either. In addition to the installed ones, the section displays games purchased not only from your account, but also the profiles of other console users. At the same time, purchases that belong to another account connected to the PlayStation 5 cannot be downloaded – you are simply transferred to the store, where you are offered to pay for them. You have to re-login from another account and only then put on the download what you need. As a result, there is no particular point in displaying the library of all users – it just annoys the eyes.

The main innovation of the PlayStation 5, and indeed of the new generation as a whole, is the SSD. With the advent of fast storage, downloads are really lightning fast in new games and fast enough in backward compatibility.
