The Epidemic and the Hybrid Child’s Journey: Netflix’s Sweet Tooth: The Boy with the Antlers

Company Netflix continues to produce film adaptations of famous projects, reaching the famous comic book Jeff LemierreSweet Tooth. A dark post-apocalyptic work with murder and cannibalism turned into a family drama about a stag boy looking for his mother.

The history of the series “Sweet Tooth: Antler Boy”Talks about the epidemic that swept the whole world. The disease, which begins with a twitching little finger, affects a person, slowly killing. Millions of infected and several waves create chaos and lead to the emergence of bandit groups. Power over the destroyed world is transferred to the former military. To the fear of infection is added another consequence of the disease – healthy people give birth to hybrid children. With bird noses, pig ears and goat hooves. Mutations go further and further. Soon, the hunt for hybrid children begins – for fears that they are carriers of the disease, and then because they may be the only key to eradicating it.

The main character – the boy-deer Gus – grew up in the company of his father far from civilization, and everything would be fine, until one day the hunters for hybrids did not get to this secluded corner of nature. Now Gus is taking a trip with former American football player Thomas Geppard across the country to Colorado, where his mother may live.

A journey across the country offers an encounter with new heroes and characters that were present in the original graphic work, but adjusted to modern Netflix standards. There are Indians, black heroes (including the pig girl) and strong women. However, the agenda here does not go beyond racial diversity, which is just wonderful. Scattered over eight chapters, the plot involves scenes of violence, but almost all of them, with the exception of the burning of the infected alive, remain behind the scenes. Wherein Christian Convery in the role of Gus is simply great. The guy has natural charisma and charm. His companion Thomas performed Nonso Anosi plays no less cheerfully. Teddy bear performed Stephanie Owen – controversial, but quite organic heroine. The line with the scientist and his wife is no less strong than the story of Gus himself. Otherwise, all eight episodes, apart from the original work, look with great interest and pleasure.

However, if you are a fan of the Jeff Lemir comic book, then you need to be prepared that the film adaptation, apart from the names of the main characters and some basic events, has almost nothing to do with the original. These are two completely different stories from each other with different style and presentation. The Netflix adaptation is a touching family story with a cute boy in a world full of colors and devoid of dirt and open violence after a global epidemic, where even the main villain looks like Dr. Robotnik played by Jim Carrey. And I personally will be happy to wait for the announcement of the second season.
