Sony and creators Resogun, Super stardust and Dead nation In some surprising way, they managed to combine their signature features. From the publisher got the cinematography, from the Finns from Housemarque – elements of arcade shoot ’em up, and from the genre, in general, everything else.
Surprisingly, it all works – it does not contradict each other, but rather complements. However, it should be understood that this is primarily a bagel. Moreover, judging by the reviews, it is quite complicated.
“Returnal is a ruthless and merciless test for centuries that has managed to preserve the magic of Housemarque games. She has a strange and unique style and content, and each level is an unpredictable adventure“, – Critical Hit, 9/10
In general, critics are reluctant to describe shortcomings, since there are not very many of them as such – and much is very subjective. For example, you cannot save in the middle of a race – if you exit the game, then next time you will have to start from the very beginning.
Some are also unhappy with the backtracking and the map – it’s hard to read.
There are quite a few good ones. Praise:
- visual component and eerie atmosphere
- plot and narration
- the notorious “nextgen sensation”
- implementation of DualSense features such as adaptive triggers and feedback
- peppy and deep gameplay.
Particular attention is paid to the atmosphere.
To summarize, then Sony and Housemarque successfully made a large-budget roguelike that combines elements of almost a dozen genres – but it does it extremely well. Fans of bagels should definitely not pass by, while the rest can pay attention.
It will take from 10 to 50 hours to complete the project – yes, such a wide range.
Returnal is only coming to PS5 tomorrow, April 30th.
