Tetsuya Nomura can’t forget Final Fantasy Versus XIII – an interesting reference to the game was found in the extension for Kingdom Hears III

This week the official release of the addon took place Re: Mind for role play Kingdom Hearts III from company Square enix. Paid expansion brought a lot of new content to the project, from various cutscenes and plot episodes to fights with powerful bosses. However a separate moment that attracted the attention of not only fans of the series, but also just various fans of Japanese role-playing games, was the ending of the fresh DLC, referring us to another work of the eminent game designer and illustrator Tetsui Nomura.

By itself, If you have not completed Re: Mind and plan to do this in the near future, then the information described below can be regarded as a spoiler. In this case, we recommend that you return to this article later.

As part of the plot of the original Kingdom Hearts 3 Sora together with his friends gets into a world based on a series of cartoons Toy story (“Toy Story”), where at some point he learns about the existence of video games called Verum rex. What is curious, this virtual project has a whole colorful trailer where you can watch the main character, a young man Yozora, his team and a mysterious girl, fighting with unknown mechanical opponents.

Even then, fans of Nomura’s work drew attention to a number of obvious parallels between the never-released Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Verum rex. Himself Jozora outwardly quite similar to the prince Noctis, and the girl whom the mysterious hero is trying so hard to save is easy enough to confuse with Stella, which occupied far from the last role in the plot canceled Versus XIII. Moreover, even by itself the name Verum Rex in Latin means “The true king“and Yozor’s name is adapted from the Japanese word 夜空 translating as”Night sky (recall that night and dreams also appeared as plot themes in Versus XIII), which only more strongly indicated a connection with Versus.

Now, after Re: Mind’s release, Kingdom Hearts 3 authors have thrown fans even more food for thought. The fact is that Yozora was far from being a “fictional” hero, but a real character in the Kingdom Hearts universe. Moreover, it is he who is the last, secret DLC boss whom Sora needs to defeat in the fray.

But the fun begins after the battle. Depending on whether you won or not, one of two finals awaits you, featuring several important details. The main scene is shown closer to the end of the video, where Yozora, shrouded in secrets, sits in the back seat of the car and watches the road through the window, which is actually a frame-by-frame quotation from the 2011 Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailer, where Prince Noctis goes off in the most similar way his driver. The video ends with a quote from the opening of the very first part of Kingdom Hearts, simultaneously pronounced by Sora and Yozora:

“Lately, strange thoughts have been visiting me more and more … is it true that everything that happens, or not?”

Following the screen goes blank, and then lights up along with the phrase “An oath to return“(“An oath worth returning to“), allowing players to further interpret what is happening.

Obviously, the Re: Mind finale provoked a stormy reaction in the fan community. Some users believe that in future projects of the Yozora series, it will take one of the key roles, replacing Sora as the main character. Others are convinced that Tetsuya Nomura still cannot let go of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, which he worked on for so many years, and therefore will try to resurrect a project within the framework of the Kingdom Hearts universe, or thanks to the creation of a new game (for example, Verum Rex), where it finally realizes all its ideas. In any case, now it remains only to wait for further announcements and enjoy countless fan theories.
