Earlier this month, Polish game resource PolskiGamedev issued a large investigation into the progress of production Dying light 2. The material mentioned internal disagreements, inept leadership and a lack of vision, which, coupled with a lengthy development process, gave the impression of an impending threat of the release of an ambitious zombie RPG.
Shortly after representatives Techland made an open refutation of the problems mentioned in the article and recently again touched on this topic in an interview with the publication Escapist. Below we have collected key excerpts from a conversation between journalists and a senior studio PR manager Alexandra Sondei and lead game designer Dying Light 2 Timon Smectal.
- The development of Dying Light 2 is moving in accordance with the internal schedule, which was revised at the beginning of the year;
- The vertical section was four years ago. Since then, the basics of the game have not changed, but its individual components have evolved through a natural process;
- About 200 people from the Techland headquarters in Wroclaw are working on the game. The Warsaw studio, in turn, continues to engage in a new unannounced project and partially helps in the production of Dying Light 2;
- The general vision of Dying Light 2 was formed collectively with the participation of Adrian Tsishevsky, Pavel Selinger and Chris Avellone before the start of development and has not changed since then. The studio does not deny that certain aspects of the project have indeed undergone changes, but this, again, is absolutely natural for the production cycle of any game;
- In the studio, any attempts of inappropriate behavior, including for leadership, are prohibited. They have a policy to combat mobbing (psychological harassment of workers), and the human resources department constantly monitors the atmosphere in the workplace;
- Techland’s employee turnover is on par with the rest of the industry. The team is constantly expanding and now the number of staff is almost 400 people;
- To date, Techalnd has no plans to enter the stock exchange, but the studio does not exclude such an opportunity in the future. The company remains independent and plans to remain in that status for the foreseeable future. Negotiations with Microsoft on the sale, as rumored, were not;
- One of the most difficult moments in the process of creating Dying Light 2 for developers was the understanding that they did not have enough time for the entire implementation of an ambitious vision. The authors have built a very comprehensive sandbox game, which requires a lot of work in terms of polishing, balancing and the like;
- The project is at the final stage of development. A separate team is currently preparing for the announcement of the release date and all related details. The studio wants to “surprise the players.”
Dying Light 2 is created for the Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
