SystemSeller: The number of owners of VR headsets has increased dramatically since the release of Half-Life: Alyx

how notes portal Road to VR, specializing in news about virtual reality devices, for the previous month alone, the number of new VR headsets recorded in the Steam service was 3 times higher than the previous record set during the festive period from December to January.

April Steam Poll about the equipment of players showed that almost two percent of users of the digital store Valve connected any VR-headset to their PC. Thus, VR turned out to have twice as many users as Linux.

It should be noted right away that the numbers presented in the Steam report are somewhat blurred. Firstly, presented in the source “monthly number of connected headsets”, means only that the headset was connected at the moment the user logged in to Steam – the report does not say whether the headset was actually used. Secondly, the numbers are presented as a fraction of the total number of users of the digital store, so we still do not have accurate data on the number of owners of VR headsets in the Steam service.

However, according to the proprietary algorithm Road to VR, which calculates the amount based on the available information, compared to March in April, the growth of VR headsets amounted to more than 950,000 units, and the total number reached 2.7 million devices. This happened after the release. Half-Life: Alyx.

The results of the study also show that the proportion Valve in the market of virtual reality devices for PCs increased (+ 1%). The company became the third largest producer of VR headsets after Oculus and HTC just a year after the launch of the Valve Index.
