Suspicious betting and replay streams – scandal surrounding Korean StarCraft II tournament with organizer from Russia

Several betting companies refused to pay the winnings to users who suspiciously accurately guessed the many outcomes of the AMD eQuarantine Cup StarCraft II matches. In particular, representatives of 1xStavka BC confirmed that they noticed suspicious bets on this tournament before the start of the matches and returned the money to the users before the start of the games.

“1xBid”:

“For this tournament, we revealed increased suspicious activity, because the return on all matches went before the start of the games. The work continues in the same vein, the activities are constantly under the control of our analytic departments in order to prevent such situations. “

Other market participants also received long express trains for the matches of this tournament. All these winnings have been canceled.

“VolcanoBET”:

“Today we can observe many questions about the transparency and honesty of the ongoing e-sports tournaments. And, unfortunately, the AMD eQuarantine Cup was one of those. Indeed, the activity on the rates for this event was suspicious, we quickly enough determined that the stream was being recorded, and took appropriate measures.

Unscrupulousness of e-sports tournaments and teams hinders the development of e-sports in general. Today it is no longer news that black lists of teams that participate in contractual matches are being formed, and sponsors refuse to put their name next to the brands that were noticed in scandals related to the so-called situation 322. Therefore, the desire to get momentary benefits for individual market participants negatively affects for the whole esports ecosystem in the long run. ”

According to Stepan’s Head of Esports Parimatch Donstepan Shulgi, the AMD eQuarantine Cup fell under suspicion after one of the customers won the bet by betting on an express of ten matches with a coefficient of 420.00. In this case, the user has never bet on eSports.

The description of the tournament also looks suspicious. The main partner of the AMD eQuarantine Cup on Liquipedia is a certain Game Hypermart store in Malaysia, which, judging by data from Google, has long been closed. The abbreviation of a well-known processor manufacturer appears in the title of the championship, although there was not a single company logo on the broadcast. The organizer of the tournament is Vladislav kaby Perchik, and only StarLadder is listed. There was no other information about the event, although famous Korean pro-players participated in it.

According to commentator Alexei Alex007 Trushlyakova, StarCraft II sometimes hosts tournaments, which are then broadcast on replays. From the AMD eQuarantine Cup stream, it was impossible to figure out if there were live fights or they were being shown on the record. However, in person, one of the participants said that he did not play matches on the day of the broadcast.

Stepan Shulga
Stepan Shulga:

“The stream is made accurately, professionally even. Nowhere is the lobby visible (immediately splash screen), recorded as live (with rewind button). At first glance, everything is clean. <...> We continue to search for at least some information in parallel and see that the games began at a strange time for Korean StarCraft II – at 9 a.m. Seoul, that is, at 3 a.m. Moscow time. A strange choice — neither ours nor yours. ”

Cybersport.ru turned to StarLadder and kaby for comments. Representatives of the Ukrainian company noted that Perchik used to work for them in SMM, and they did not work with the AfreecaTV platform on which the StarLadder channel was registered.

StarLadder
StarLadder:

“In 2019, StarLadder suspended work with the StarCraft discipline. Vladislav Perchik provided us with SMM services, but since March 20, we said goodbye to him. We have not heard about the tournament and the stream to our channels. As for the link to Liquipedia, we do not work with the AfreecaTV platform and have no relation to this channel. We will probably write to support about blocking for using our naming, so that such situations do not arise. “

Perchik, in a comment for Cybersport.ru, said that many tournaments are replayed, and an inconvenient time for Korea and the CIS was chosen at the request of the audience who sponsored the competition. StarLadder has remained in the link to the channel since the time when kaby covered the discipline in the Ukrainian studio.

Vladislav kaby Perchik:

“I really had this tournament. And yes, like in many other online StarCraft II tournaments, such as Wardi tournaments, the broadcast was recorded. The viewer who sponsored the event asked for a stream on Afreeca at a certain time – said that he now lives in Asia. For me, this is partly even more convenient, since no one bothers at night. Of course, it won’t work, but I’m not a fan.

The only problem is that from Russia, Afreeca streams can be watched stably only if the bitrate does not exceed 3,500 kbit / s. I know this because we have been doing official GSL streams there for many years. Therefore, I prepared a video on games in advance, and commented on it live – I already used such a system, for example, for the New Year’s tournament on my channel. In addition, this way I was able to record a second video for YouTube, where I need a higher bitrate. My computer, unfortunately, does not pull out stably to stream two streams from the game by replays. As for the channel’s address, after the StarLadder StarCraft II department was frozen, our partners from the AfreecaTV international office cannot yet return the old address / korea20 to us. ”

Kaby also said that the tournament organizer had access to a document with all the results. Perchik claims that he and the players are not involved in suspicious bets.

Vladislav kaby Perchik
Vladislav kaby Perchik:

“The bookmakers made a whole story around all this, supposedly someone was trying to trick them. Yes, I do not care about bets and everything connected with them. Did I share the results with someone? Yes, the sponsor had access to a Google spreadsheet with schedule and results. Could he make bets? In theory, he could.

I don’t understand why this should be my problem. My job as a public figure in StarCraft II is to ensure that matches are fair. They have passed. When they took place and how exactly I should stream them – somehow I will figure it out myself. To set the time of the stream, and not the actual time of the matches, is the usual practice of Liquipedia and does not contradict its rules, as well as update the score during the course of streams in the record. The rest of Liquipedia is a public resource. If you see inaccuracies, you shouldn’t write canvases about them on Facebook. Create an account, correct, wiki markup is simple.

In general, I’m sorry, but, in my opinion, these are all some advanced PR technologies that allowed Stepan to tell the industry community how they “monitor” and “notify”. In general, I don’t mind, just don’t get me here, my spectators and players, to whom the “experts” broke into personalities, introducing themselves as employees of the Blizzard-partner ogranization PM in illiterate English. Your problems don’t bother us: StarCraft II vs. Betting. ”

It is difficult to draw any definite conclusions from the information received, but this precedent will certainly become a valuable lesson both for bookmakers and tournament organizers. I really do not want many beloved discipline, which is already far from the peak of popularity, to unwittingly acquire a dubious reputation. One of the best RTS of all time should not be associated with fake matches and a scam tool.

The AMD eQuarantine Cup was held May 23-24 online. Eight players from South Korea won a thousand dollars. In the finale Eo soo yoon soo won Lee Bunny Jae Sana with a score of 3: 1.
