Sony sued for monopoly on the sale of digital copies of games

Edition Bloomberg reports that consumers are suing Sony Interactive Entertainment for a monopoly, thanks to which the company limits the sale of digital copies of games only to its own store PlayStation Store

Two years ago, Sony banned third-party stores such as Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart from selling PlayStation download codes. As a result, the company’s own store became the only source of digital copies.

Plaintiffs said the monopoly allows Sony to charge ultra-competitive prices for digital copies that are significantly higher than their physical counterparts sold in a competitive retail market and significantly higher than they would in a competitive digital copy market.

According to the lawsuit, consumers pay 175% more for digital copies than for the same games on disc.
