Sony Registers Patent with Cash Betting System for Esports Events

Company Sony has registered a patent for a system that is actually a virtual tote with bets on e-sports disciplines. The document with the patent dates back to 2019, but it attracted the attention of the network to itself only now.

According to the description presented in the file, in essence the system implies the ability for users to bet real money (including cryptocurrency) or game items on the outcome of eSports matches in a variety of disciplines, including fighting games and shooters.

In this case, the determination of the coefficients in the system falls on machine learning algorithms – they will analyze the data available in the public space (for example, a series of victories or defeats of a particular team), determining the most winning options.

The patent also describes a mechanic according to which users can enter into disputes with each other, betting money on various probabilities and outcomes.

Of course, as with any other ideas that exist exclusively on paper, the full implementation of the above is questionable – a patent may die without even reaching the stage of a working prototype.

Betting on virtual gaming events is a separate promising market. Earlier this year, an independent survey was conducted, according to which 52% of respondents expressed an interest in betting on major esports events.
