Company Sony regularly updates its series of accessories, especially for the launch of new consoles. Together with the appearance Playstation 5 new full-size headphones were also released – PULSE 3Dwhose potential is revealed in a series of exclusive projects.
APPEARANCE AND DELIVERY
PULSE 3D comes in a solid white box with a blue top. Inside there are the headphones themselves, a USB Type-A to Type-C cable for charging, a cable with a 3.5 mm minijack for working with devices that do not have a wireless connection, and a wireless radio module with a USB Type-A connector. The headphones are well secured in the packaging and are not subject to potential damage from being thrown or dropped on the floor. The price in our retail chains is 8,290 rubles.
GENERAL OPPORTUNITIES AND JOB
The PlayStation 5-style design decision raises a number of questions, but the black and white combination looks really bright. The ear cushions are covered with artificial leather, which will surely peel off in a couple of years. But, fortunately, they are removable, with latches, so it will be enough just to buy a replacement, keeping the “ears” themselves. After the expensive Beats, where the ear cushions are glued with cheap glue, this is a revelation. The PULSE 3D is held on the head by a rubber band.
On the headphones themselves there are buttons for adjusting the volume, turning on and switching between chat and games, two microphones, a 3.5 mm jack and a charging indicator. Conveniently marked R and L on the inside.
Interestingly, Sony did not provide for head adjustment – the headphones are made for the middle head. This is not very convenient, since people have different heads, as well as hairstyles.
PULSE 3D weighs 0.3 kg, and many girls may find them heavy – you can already see complaints of neck pain on store websites after several hours of playing. However, this is all very individual. My headphones sat down very well, without causing discomfort and without putting pressure on my ears. At the same time, they very poorly isolate ambient sounds, so if you live in a noisy area, you will have to crank the volume to maximum.
In active mode from one full charge, PULSE 3D works for about 12 hours.
We tested PULSE 3D first on a PC. The radio module was immediately recognized by Windows 10, after which the headphones quickly connected to the computer, becoming the main sound source.
Sony is the king of the mid-range. Pop music sounds bright and deep. The sound is warm and mellow. At high frequencies, some of the instruments are lost, but everything does not roll into a mess, while at low frequencies percussion instruments sound quieter than necessary. An app with an equalizer could fix everything, but it’s not there. Conventional rock, like Yungblud tracks, is well received.
The bass is almost perfect, but the noises and explosions in PC games, on the other hand, are quieter than expected. However, you are unlikely to buy PULSE 3D for listening to music, although they cope here at the level of average solutions. The main thing for which it is worth buying a new product from Sony is 3D Tempest AudioTech technology.
GAMES
3D Tempest AudioTech technology is the main thing for which it makes sense to purchase these headphones if you are the lucky owner of a hard-to-find PlayStation 5.
3D Tempest AudioTech is a close analogue of Dolby Atmos, optimized for games for PlayStation 5. The technology is supported by Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Demon’s Souls and Sackboy: Big Adventure.
In Spider-Man, when playing PULSE 3D, a city that lives by its own rules feels really alive – the sound is incredibly spacious and realistic.
In Demon’s Souls, the sense of threat and danger around every corner is peaked when passing through headphones, making battles even more intense.
Sackboy simultaneously senses and recognizes sound sources from different angles, which makes the game more spacious.
Other projects will come out next year that will offer even deeper sound integration.
TOTAL
SONY PULSE 3D is a slightly above average solution for music, which you will not take with you outside, as you hardly have the desire to attract maximum attention to yourself.
The lack of adjustment under the head and only 12 hours of work can be attributed to unpleasant disadvantages, but the bundle with several connection options and an easy connection system are huge advantages.
At the same time, all the charms of PULSE 3D are revealed precisely in games specially created for the PlayStation 5. And if maximum immersion is a priority for you, then PULSE 3D is unlikely to have a worthy alternative in the same price segment due to the maximum integration of 3D Tempest AudioTech.
TESTING OTHER ACCESSORIES
In addition to the 3D PULSE headphones, we have already tested several other PlayStation 5 accessories such as the HD Camera, charger and remote control. Let’s take a closer look at them.
HD CAMERA
This accessory is currently exclusively for streamers. The camera is equipped with two wide-angle lenses with a resolution of 1920 × 1080. Surprisingly for many, it is not compatible with PlayStation VR, so you will have to use an old PlayStation 4 accessory for the helmet.
The device can be fixed to the TV frame and launched during broadcasts. In addition to the basic functionality, the camera can cut out the background in real time, but there are some artifacts here.
Connection to the console is via the USB Type-A connector on the back of the console.
Also note that the camera does not have a built-in microphone and Sony recommends DualSense to communicate. In my opinion, this is a very useless decision so far, at least until the announcement of a new helmet, which may require this particular camera.
The price of HD Camera for PS5 in Russian retail is 4,999 rubles.
REMOTE CONTROLLER
A remote control with quick access to Netflix, YouTube and Disney + is not a very popular solution in our country. We could talk about some kind of functionality if our local services, like Okko, ivi or KinoPoisk, were hanging on the buttons. Being able to use this remote as a replacement for your standard TV remote isn’t overwhelming either. Universal remotes are on the market from 700 rubles.
The price of the PS5 remote control in Russian retail is 2,499 rubles.
CHARGING STATION FOR DUALSENSE CONTROLLER
The Sony CFI-ZDS1 DualSense charging station is probably the most interesting of the potential purchases. Since PS5 controllers live about 5-6 hours with active use, having a spare on hand, which you can always take during the game, and put the discharged one on charge at a convenient station, is an important point for many. At the same time, the accessory can charge two controllers at once and does not occupy a port on the PlayStation 5 itself.
True, be prepared for the fact that the charging time at the station is the same as for the cord. But if you have extra space, you often play online shooters or the same Demon’s Souls, and finances allow, you can consider the DualSense Sony CFI-ZDS1 for purchase.
The price of the charging station in Russian retail is 2,499 rubles.
