Sony Pictures movies become a Netflix exclusive

Company Sony and streaming service Netflix announced a multi-year agreement under which films Sony pictures will be released exclusively in the online cinema of the streaming giant in the United States immediately after the screening in cinemas.

The amount of the deal was not disclosed, however, according to Bloomberg News, Sony wished to receive up to $ 250 million a year.

As such, Netflix now has exclusive rights to add franchises to its movie catalog. “Spiderman“,”Jumanji“,”Bad Boys“as well as upcoming sequel premieres”Venom“, blockbuster”Morbius” from Jared Leto starring, “Ancharteda“and many other pictures.

As part of the deal, Netflix also gains the ability to purchase non-theater films and participate in their production, thus adding to its line of original films. The agreement will finally enter into force in 2023.

It is noteworthy that the prerequisites for such a development of events already existed, since Sony’s lack of its own streaming platform, like Disney +, negatively affects its financial position in the context of the pandemic.

The company has previously sold Netflix international distribution rights (excluding China) of an animated film “Mitchells vs. machines“(Connected / Mitchells vs. the Machines) for 110 million dollars, and, as it turned out, this was only the beginning for joint cooperation.

With this in mind, the emergence of a conditional online cinema Sony + by analogy with Disney + is now extremely unlikely.
