As of December 31, 2019 Sony implemented 108.9 million PlayStation 4 consoles. This is stated in the quarterly report presented today. Last fall, the system went around Wii in general terms, and now ahead of Playstation 2 on sales dynamics for the same time since launch.
Sony sold fewer consoles in October-December than a year earlier – 6.1 million vs 8.1 million. Games users also bought less – 81.1 million vs 87.2 millionAs a result, the quarterly revenue and operating profit of the PlayStation division compared to the same period a year earlier decreased by 20% (to $ 5.81 billion) and 26.8% (to $ 0.492 billion), respectively. However, if you look at the results more globally, it turns out that the third quarter of the current fiscal year is still one of the best in the history of the PlayStation in terms of revenue, namely the third largest.
If you look at the whole of 2019, then by revenue it is the second in the history of the PlayStation.
In just three quarters (April-December), Sony sold 12.1 million PlayStation 4 consoles. The total annual plan by March 31 (13.5 million) is likely to be beaten. However, initially Sony was going to sell 16 million set-top boxes in a year, and then twice lowered the bar.
Other statistics:
- Number of subscribers Playstation plus rose to 38.8 million people (at the end of December 2019 there were 36.3 million).
- 49% sales of major releases (games that have both physical and digital copies) had in the third quarter on Playstation storethe rest is wheels. In the third quarter of the last fiscal year, the share of the figure was 37%.
In the fall of 2023, Sony will launch the PlayStation 5, which has not yet been presented. It is not mentioned in the financial report.
