In the coming weeks on Xbox Series X / S more backward compatibility games with support will start to appear FPS Boost… Ahead of this, Xbox Program Management Director Jason Ronald explained how the new feature of the consoles works and how they plan to achieve speed improvements for backward compatible games. FPS Boost is currently only available in five games with Xbox one… When asked if Microsoft plans to add “boost” support to games for the original Xbox or for titles where improvements for the Xbox One X are available, Ronald said that it all depends on the specific title.
“It really comes down to the performance of the title, which will determine whether we add it or not. As I said, we cannot make changes to the source code, so every game is like a black box for us.
Tests need to be done. In a number of cases, we have determined that by slightly lowering the system resolution while running a game, we can effectively double the frame rate. This is a great example of why we’re going to add an option to disable FPS Boost, as some players will prefer resolution over frame rate, while others will opt for frame rate over resolution. So we’re putting control of this in the hands of gamers. “
Jason mentioned that in some cases where, in their opinion, it is possible to free up resources, they disable some effects, such as anisotropic filtering, in order to get the most out of FPS Boost… He also noted that the team is separately looking at increasing FPS in some of the backward-compatible titles for Series S, which already run at 60fps on Series X (improved versions for One X). At the end of the day, this is game-specific, and they look at each case individually to achieve the best result, which doesn’t necessarily come down to reduced resolution or visuals.
