Recently, as part of a live meeting with students from a New Zealand school Gabe Newell asked a question about whether Valve release their games on consoles or will remain only on the PC.
The head of the company said that it will become more clear about this by the end of the year, while emphasizing that the answer may not be quite what everyone expects. Perhaps Valve will indeed return to the console market, but with its own platform.
In a discussion thread on ResetEra, a former Valve employee writing under a verified finalflame account said that some time ago, the company was developing a “real” PC console, similar to Steam Machines, only “done right”… According to him, the production of the new “car” had gone quite far, and they were going to sell it together with a VR helmet. Valve Index and Half-Life: Alyxby making the cost affordable through the installment plan.
As a result, as it is now clear, the project was not implemented, but Valve had more than serious plans: specifically for this business, the company opened a new laboratory and production line in Washington. Perhaps, finalflame suggests, the console will still appear, but it will take longer than expected.
