With films about space and the conquest of interstellar space, something incomprehensible is happening. Instead of the romance of flights to other worlds or bright thrillers, in most cases we have recently been waiting for a boring, sometimes drawn-out movie about human relations, experiences and the current social agenda. This was the case with the film “Proxima”About a Russian woman-cosmonaut performed by Eva Greenand the same happens with a new project Joe Pennybringing together a stellar cast of Anna Kendrick, Toni Collette and Daniel Dae Kim…
“Far Space” (or Stowaway – in the original) tells the story of a two-year flight of a three-man expedition to Mars. The crew, formed of a strict captain (Collet), a doctor (Kendrick) and a biologist (Kim), is faced with a breakdown in the oxygen purification system, which occurred due to a technician (Shamir Anderson). And if at first everything goes well, then after a few days it turns out that the ship was adapted for two and expanded for a crew of up to three people, and the remaining oxygen is not enough to fly to the Martian station. And then the struggle to save the “hare” begins.
What could be a tense thriller or psychological drama turns into a slurred tale of a Korean man and a white woman rescuing a black technician completely useless for the mission.
It is noteworthy that in the original script for Penna’s first directorial work, Lost in Ice with Mads Mikkelsen, the protagonist survived a shipwreck without oxygen on Mars, but the Martian appeared on the market, as a result of which the action of the film had to be transferred to the Arctic. It is not surprising that the topic of lack of air and the journey to Mars itself have migrated into the history of “Far Space”.
But the main problem is not that Penna is realizing her dream, but in the humiliating self-repetition and copying, which became critical for this film. To our great regret, “Distant Space”, in addition to “Lost”, immediately resembles all films about space – from “Gravity” to “The Martian”, and seems like a bad copy of the recognized hits.
The acting leaves much to be desired, and the cutie Kendrick has not left the image of the singing Cinderella, shown in the movie “Into the Woods”. Reflecting most of the screen time, Shamir Anderson generally replays noticeably. Dramatic scenes look ridiculous, and there is too much camera pathos in the feat of the crew members.
It is clear that this is only the second big work for Joe Penna, but in the film with Mikkelsen there was a new sincerity behind the low budget and modest set. Here, a weak plot, secondary nature and commercial calculation come to the fore.
