Review of The Last of Us Part II

Exploring the surroundings, you can stumble upon an abandoned bathroom in which fry swim, or see a wild beast that will not appear anywhere else.

The world of The Last of Us: Part II is so elaborated and rich in small elements that the created artificial restrictions, like cliffs that go far deeper into the earth, or passages littered with garbage, do not seem to be elements that destroy the atmosphere.

There is no open world in The Last of Us: Part II, and the side locations available for research are implemented in a manner Uncharted 4. And the memories of this particular game accompany you throughout history. This is probably not so bad, although The Last of Us: Part II loses a bit of uniqueness.

As in the adventures of Nathan Drake, you can walk past an abandoned house or try to find an emergency entrance. Inside, a reward will await you for your diligence: medicines, components, cartridges and items important for modification.

The game encourages your curiosity with simple puzzles looking for codes from safes or physical tasks, where you need to have time to open the gate before the trash can slowly crawls from the elevation. And of course, when scouring buildings, you find weapons mounts that speed up switching between pistols and rifles. Otherwise, you will have to spend precious seconds for Ellie to put her backpack on the ground and get the right weapon.

In the second half of the history of research, it is much smaller and everything recalls the original world Gears of war and first Uncharted with waves of enemies and battles with bosses, but there are three locations that are amazing in atmosphere and design. The conditions of the embargo do not allow me to write about this in detail, but believe me, they are really amazing.

The crafting system has not changed much since the time of the first The Last of Us. You can create silencers, Molotov cocktails, smoke bombs and mines on the go, as well as improve edged weapons and produce explosive arrows. You find new items for production in the study of the environment or the plot of the game.

The same goes for pumping. New skill branches are unlocked by reading manuals from various fields of knowledge, which are often hidden in side safes. You can open skills in exchange for collected capsules in one of many categories – from stealth to all the same crafting.

However, these skills, in addition to enhancing health, are mostly useless. It is unlikely that the ability to craft an item faster for a couple of seconds or to receive additional arrows is worth the discovery of the entire branch.

Separately, it’s worth noting workbenches where you can modify the weapons available to you, for example, by attaching an optical sight to a rifle or strengthening a shotgun with a butt. It is natural for The Last of Us Part II that all these actions are accompanied by unique animations. Ellie disassembles a rifle or pistol and reassembles with the necessary improvement.

Pumping and crafting are slightly different in sets between the first and second half of the three sections of the game, in terms of skill sets and combat arsenal.

All available ammunition must be used during battles with infected people. Those infected even at an average level of complexity pose a serious threat, both alone and in groups. And you often have to plan an attack as a full-fledged operation with many unknowns.

Developers have greatly improved AI. Zombies and humans behave differently when rebooting from a savepoint. In one case, they can go to inspect the house, and in another go to comb the thick grass where the heroine took refuge.
Infected people are able to unite in groups, lure into the den and launch an attack from the back.

You can set traps, throw detachments of opponents with Molotov cocktails or kill them one at a time with a pistol with a silencer, knife or tactical bow.

Sometimes a partner comes to your aid. Also helps the system of rebounds and dodges with counterattacks with a knife or other cold steel. But against a few enemies, your tricks may not work.

The number of mutants in The Last of Us: Part II compared to the original has grown significantly and replenished with several new individuals. Some are similar to Toplyakov, but much stronger. Others are completely unique and occur once per game, causing a bunch of problems.
