Review of MSI Clutch GM08 mouse and MSI Agility GD60 mat

For nearly 40 years, mice have been an integral part of the computer. They have come a long way from the first prototype of the 60s with direct drive and heavy wood body to modern devices with fast optical sensors and adjustable body weight. And where the mouse has always been and the rug.

The choice of accessories is especially important for players – accuracy and ease of movement are very important, and it depends not only on the mouse, but also on the surface.

Recently, two devices from the company came to us for a test MSI – wired mouse Clutch GM08 and a rug Agility GD60… The price of a mouse in Russia is 1890 rubles, and the rug is available for 2550 rubles

COMPLETE SET AND APPEARANCE

The mouse comes in a thin cardboard box, mostly white with black and gray sides. The front side shows the Clutch GM08 itself, the MSI logo and the model name, while the back shows the main characteristics and features of this device.

Inside, the mouse is packed in black thick cardboard, and the package includes only a brief instruction in 27 languages, including Russian. Also, inside the mouse itself, you will find three weights – one weighing 5 grams and two each 3 grams. The Clutch GM08 measures 128 x 68.5 x 40.5 mm. The weight of the device is 94 grams (without weights and cable), and with cable and weights – 136 grams. Cable length -1.8 meters.

The cable does not detach and sticks out of the front of the mouse. Made of standard black PVC braid. The Clutch GM08 is connected via a standard USB Type-A connector, the tip is gold-plated.

The mouse is made in a symmetrical shape and has a comfortable grip both when used with the right hand and left. The body is made mainly of smooth black plastic, which turned out to be pleasant to the touch. The plastic is strong, matte and slightly easily soiled. If you get it dirty or dust settles, it can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth.

For a more confident grip on the sides, the manufacturer has provided embossed sidewalls, which are called “dragon scales”. They cope with the function – the mouse does not slip out of the hands.

Just below the embossed part, there are strips of LED backlighting. All buttons are conveniently located under your fingers and you do not need to exert effort, since they are pressed together quite easily. When pressed, the most common click is heard. The wheel here is large and has a rubberized texture with a relief – it scrolls easily and almost silently. On the right, the wheel has LED illumination.

In place of the grip, the manufacturer has placed a matte transparent logo in the shape of a dragon, which hides RGB lighting underneath. At the bottom of the mouse there are 4 plastic legs along the edges. In the middle there is a sensor in a triangular fossa. Weights are also stored under the lid on the bottom to make the mouse 11 grams heavier.

The rug comes in a large box made of thick white cardboard with red sides.

The front side shows the mat itself, the MSI logo and the full name of the product, and the back, as usual, shows the characteristics and main features. Inside the box, the product is additionally placed in plastic packaging to protect it from damage. Under the rug there is a USB Type-A to micro USB power cable, as well as a brief instruction in Russian and 39 more languages. The dimensions of the mat including the backlight control unit are 386 x 290 x 10.2 mm. Weight without cable is 234 grams, and with it – 266 grams. The cable length is 1.8 meters. The latter is made, as is the case with the mouse, from a standard black PVC braid, and the tips are gold-plated.

The upper part of the mat is made of micro-textured fabric, which is very pleasant to the touch – the Clutch GM08 mouse just hovers on it.

The color of the mat is black, with a dragon in dark gray in the lower left corner, and the MSI logo in the same color in the opposite corner. At the top in the middle is the backlight control unit, which has a micro USB connector for power, a control button and the MSI logo that glows in unison with the backlight. There is an LED strip along the perimeter, which is attached to the rug with a neat overlock stitching.

On the bottom of the Agility GD60, the surface is made of textured natural rubber, which lies perfectly on the surface and does not slip even with active use of the mouse.

BUTTONS AND BACKLIGHT

In total, the mouse has 6 buttons, if you count the built-in wheel. Under the middle and forefingers are two main buttons – right and left. Between them is a wheel, which is also pressed like a button, and just below the DPI switch button to adjust the sensitivity levels. On the left side there are forward and backward buttons. In general, everything is pretty standard.

The DPI buttons and buttons on the left side are made of glossy plastic and have chopped, sharp edges. The latter are not very pleasant to the touch. Also, when scrolling with the wheel, the index finger often hits the sharp edge on top of the DPI button, which is also very annoying for the pad.

The mouse supports sensitivity from 200 to 4200 dpi thanks to the PixArt PAW 3519 optical sensor, and you can switch between them thanks to 5 preset profiles using the DPI button. You just need to successively press the button to select one of 5 profiles: 200, 400, 800, 1600 and 3200. But if you download the official MSI Dragon Center app, then the quick profiles can be further customized.

Also, by long holding the DPI button, you can turn the backlight on or off. Its effect is ripple and the color is red. No other effects or colors are provided.

As for the controls on the mat, there is only one button on the top of the control unit. But with effects and a choice of colors here is much richer than a mouse. By holding down the button for 3 seconds, you can switch between backlight modes such as flow, fade, steady glow, monochrome breathing, multi-color breathing, single-color blinking, multi-color blinking. With a steady glow and one-color effects, they give you a choice between 6 colors – switching occurs with the usual pressing of a button.

SOFT

The mouse supports the official MSI Dragon Center app. Through it, you can register the warranty, as well as manage the settings. Unfortunately, there are not many options here. The developers offer to control the mouse illumination in the Mystic Light section, choosing from two available effects – ripple and off. Not much. You can also save three backlight profiles, which is useless for this mouse. In addition, in the Gaming Gear section through the app, you can also adjust the sensor sensitivity and five preset profiles in 200 DPI increments. Nothing else can be done with the mouse in this application.

The mat simply does not support software, which seems to me an omission given the more advanced backlighting system than the mouse.

TOTAL

The MSI Clutch GM08 mouse turned out to be quite controversial. On the one hand, it has not very good buttons with annoying chopped projections and limited functionality, and on the other hand, it has a convenient shape, pleasant materials, customizable weight and, most importantly, price. As for the rug, it copes with its task with a bang, and the built-in backlight is made with high quality and does not dazzle at night.
