Review of HUAWEI FreeBuds Pro headphones

Recently we had earplugs on the test Tone Free from company Lg, and now, six months after entering the West, we got Free buds pro from HUAWEI… They received a bone conduction system and an active noise reduction mode.

APPEARANCE AND PACKAGING

The earbuds come in a neat white box that opens like modern phone packages – by slowly sliding down the bottom platform. Inside, the HUAWEI Free Buds Pro are located directly in a round case, which acts as a cover and a charger at the same time. Nearby are a USB-A to Type-C cable, multilingual instructions and a set of additional silicone ear pads in two sizes. In the official HUAWEI store, they ask for 12,990 rubles for a new product.

GENERAL FEELING AND WORK

In terms of design, the solution from HUAWEI evokes associations with Apple’s AirPods Pro. Similar to the American product, the Chinese one also offers a multi-mode active noise canceling function.

With noise canceling turned off, the headphones can work from one full charge for 6-7 hours, with noise canceling – in the region of 4 hours. By feeding the earbuds from the case, it can get up to 30 hours of use in total. They charge quickly: 10 minutes is enough for 2 hours of headphone operation in normal mode.

Thanks to the support of Bluetooth 5.2, the “ears” perfectly pair with both the native HUAWEI environment or Android environment, as well as with solutions based on iOS. True, all the functionality with touch switches, logos on the screen and other visual pleasures is available only on smartphones of the Chinese company. Owners of Apple phones received the Huawei AI Life application, where you can see the battery level and enable one of the active noise canceling modes. Without the app, Free Buds Pro will work with limited functionality. That is, they will determine whether they are in the ears by the pressure sensor and simply play music or serve as a headset.

It is also worth noting that the Free Buds Pro have received a sound transmission mode, available through apps. In other words, the headphones transmit sounds around you through the microphone, allowing you to hear what is happening around you.

HUAWEI Free Buds Pro are IPX4 dust and water resistant. This means they are not suitable for swimming or may fail if exposed to heavy rain. But they can survive a light drizzle and an active load in the gym with sweat, but it’s better not to risk it and not wash them under the tap or shower.

As I wrote above, the kit comes with two more pairs of ear pads, but they are all more sharpened for a man’s ear, and each earphone weighs about 6 grams. If you are a fragile girl, then there is a chance that Free Buds Pro will fall out of your ear, so check them on the demo stand before buying. Personally, during brisk walking, riding on bumps or running, they held firmly in my ears, and only fell out a couple of times at the very beginning of use due to the cap and sudden movement.

SOUND AND MICROPHONE

I tested the headphones in early spring, when it is still a little cold and strong south winds begin to blow. I often used headphones with a hat outdoors and without a hat indoors or in the car. It is worth noting here that Free Buds Pro activates three microphones and a bone conduction sensor for voice communication, which makes the sound as clear and transparent as possible. The technology works for both reception and transmission. And active noise cancellation removes all extraneous background sounds during communication, making your conversation with the interlocutor as if recorded on a professional sound loop in the studio. Therefore, the calls, both outside and at home, were very clean both for me and for the interlocutor. Often people on the other end couldn’t tell if I was talking from home or while driving down the street. In all my tests, Free Buds Pro looks like the best professional headset for those who often talk on the phone in different conditions.

Speaking of music, we tested Free Buds Pro on the classics, the new album of the Krovostok group, compositions by Lana Del Rey, Sam Smith, Weeknd, Grechka, as well as heavy music. All tests have shown that the HUAWEI product has rich bass and well-balanced mids and highs. On average, these headphones sound noticeably worse than the Sony WF-10000XM3, but even better in places than the AirPods Pro. And they certainly surpass in all respects the Tone Free from LG we tested earlier.

FINDINGS

HUAWEI Free Buds Pro is an excellent headset with high sound quality and amazing noise cancellation that only reaches its full potential in the ecosystem of a Chinese manufacturer. However, even as a solution for owners of smartphones from Apple or other Android devices, these headphones are not bad. Of course, Free Buds Pro has its drawbacks, in addition to limited functionality on third-party devices: it is a large size of ear pads for a small female ear and the difficulty of removing them from the case, especially if your fingers are sweating or just damp after washing, but it will cope with the latter problems perfectly dry T-shirt or soft towel.
