While the remake is based on the original Diablo 2 code, otherwise it will be two separate and separate games. This, in particular, will affect the policy regarding user modifications: no new restrictions will appear in the old version.
As it turned out, the fears were exaggerated. A lot of data was indeed lost forever. But the developers used all the opportunities and sources to return everything they could.
Thanks to Andre Abrahamyan, the amazing Blizzard designer who worked with us for this. He just walked up to the developers’ tables and asked, “Hey, do you have anything left?” This gave us not only the source code, but many other resources as well. When you watch the HD video of Tyrael’s wings, you see the original model of the original Tyrael’s wings. And this is just one of the few assets that we managed to find and use.
Sometimes designers had to resort to unusual sources. For example, 3D models of the market stalls in Lut Galein were once used for advertising posters. In the original Diablo 2, they were converted to 2D sprites, but Blizzard was able to recover the 3D files.
However, even losing everything would not be overwhelming when working on Resurrected, since most of the assets were redrawn from scratch. But on the other hand, players will be able to switch between the updated and original graphics.
The loss of the source code could be critical – but this did not happen. The original Diablo 2 is still getting patches. And the peculiarities and imperfections of the old code retain the sense of authenticity that Diablo 2 fans will feel.
