Realme 5 review – testing a budget smartphone with a quad-camera and a huge battery

To the editors of the portal Gamemag.ru the smartphone hit the test Realme 5. In early February, the manufacturer announced a reduction in prices. As part of a special promotion, a smartphone can be bought on the website and in the “Citylink“For 10990 rubles.

Realme – this is a relatively new Chinese brand, which launched in the spring of 2018, but appeared in Russia only in the summer of 2019. The company is a subsidiary BBK Electronicswhich owns Oneplus, Oppo and Vivo. Initially, Realme smartphones were sold under the Oppo Real brand, but then they separated into an organization independent of Oppo.

Realme is positioning itself as a manufacturer of stylish youth smartphones for little money, but with powerful stuffing and good cameras.

The device comes in a classic white box made of hard cardboard with the image of the phone and technical specifications.

The package includes: a smartphone, a thick silicone tinted cover, a charger, a microUSB meter cable, a clip for opening a SIM card slot, as well as instructions in Russian. Product Warranty – 12 months.

The size of the smartphone is 164.4 x 75.6 x 8.3 mm. Weight – 198 grams. The device is impressive in both weight and size. Especially if you use the case from the kit.

Two versions are sold in Russia: Purple crystal and Blue crystal. Both have an effect on the plastic case at the back – overflow with chopped edges, like quartz.

On the purple version, this is not so noticeable – without a cover, it looks pretty strict, changing the shade depth depending on the lighting. If you put on the cover from the kit, the effect almost disappears. In this case, the smartphone will look almost black, occasionally shimmering dark purple in direct sunlight. If you need a catchy design, it is better to take the blue version, which is always brighter.

Build quality is good. The plastic case does not push inward. The buttons fit snugly on the device and do not play.

The smartphone lies well in the big hand, but due to the glossy case it can leave noticeable fingerprints on it. They are not so visible because of the dark color, but for the same reason, dust is more visible on the purple Realme 5.

The camera is neatly decorated with a steel contour and protrudes slightly above the body space, so the gadget is unevenly lying on the surface. For reliability, it’s better to use a case.

The side frames are small – 3.5 mm left and right, taking into account the metal edging of the case. The upper frame is larger – 4 mm. It has a drop-shaped cutout for the camera, which goes 8 mm deep into the screen. The bottom frame is 9 mm. With a cover, the frames become larger.

Above the selfie camera is a speaker for phone calls. The top end is empty. On the left side there is a power button, on the right there are two separate buttons for changing the volume, a slot and a hole for removing a SIM card (you can insert two nano-SIM cards and one microSD at once).

At the bottom there is a microphone, speaker, connector for a 3.5-mm mini-jack, as well as an input for microUSB. It is a pity that the company did not use USB Type-C, but for a budget smartphone this is an understandable solution.

The sound quality through the mono speaker is pretty standard for budget smartphones. There is no bass, the middle ones are slightly teary, the high ones whistle. Some instruments are not audible. Some of the sounds in saturated compositions merge into mass, but the volume is good, pop music and podcasts sound normal, as well as compositions that use a small number of instruments playing in the middle register, such as classics performed by a quartet or duet.

If you listen to music through a wired headset, the sound becomes better. There is a bass, which is still not enough, and there are more medium frequencies than we would like. High whistle, while the volume is normal, but not excessive.

On the back of the smartphone are: a quad-camera with an ultra-wide-angle module and flash, the Realme logo and a round slot for fingerprint recognition. The latter works instantly even with wet fingers or in the cold (I tested the device at a temperature of -14 degrees Celsius).

The system also has a face unlock via a selfie camera, but I still couldn’t set it up – for some reason it doesn’t see my face even in a bright room.

The main area (89%) in front of Realme 5 is a huge 6.5-inch IPS-display with a resolution of 1600 x 720 pixels (269 pixels per inch). Given the size, this value is not enough to clearly see all the details on the high-resolution content. The display does not have HDR support.

The aspect ratio of 20: 9 turned out to be a fairly convenient format for using a smartphone in split-screen mode. As soon as you slide three fingers on the display from the bottom up, Realme 5 will divide the picture into two parts and offer to select the second application. You can read the site pages in a browser when YouTube is enabled without a Premium subscription. The speed of the operating system drops slightly, but in general the smartphone is functioning normally.

To protect the screen, the manufacturer used Corning Gorilla Glass 3+.

1200: 1 image contrast. The maximum brightness is approximately 480 nits. The minimum is 0.35. In very bright rooms and in the sun, the image remains readable. In dark rooms, especially when watching movies or YouTube, the dark parts of the image, like the black bars on the sides, look grayish. For true black, more expensive OLED displays are needed.

In the settings, you can change the color temperature using the convenient slider. For more natural colors, it’s better to move the slider towards the warmth.

There is an option to change the font size and screen menu, as well as the night mode, which makes the picture too yellow for comfortable use. For eye protection, it’s better to just lower the brightness level in the evening.

The core of the system is an eight-core processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 with a frequency of up to 2 GHz (four Qualcomm Kryo 260 Gold cores and four Qualcomm Kryo 260 Silver cores), which works in conjunction with a graphics chip Qualcomm Adreno 610. The manufacturing process is 11 nm.

The device has 3 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage space. The latter can be expanded using MicroSD for another 256 GB.

The system is powered by a built-in battery 5000 mAh, which is enough for almost three days of active use. This is one of the best indicators on the market. At minus temperatures, two hours of active photographing with video recording and uploading images to online discharged the gadget by only 9% (from 100% to 91%).

The smartphone does not have fast charging – it needs 3 hours 33 minutes in order to recharge the charge from the outlet from zero to 100%.

Shell ColorOS 6 based on the ninth “Android” it works pretty fast overall and looks pretty good. There are various settings for displaying the menu, including the number of application icons, the location and type of navigation buttons, the creation and configuration of a convenient button, and so on.

In the test AnTuTu Benchmark Realme 5 test sample scored 169 338 points, which is an excellent result for the budget category of smartphones:

CPU – 70 174;
GPU – 33,132;
MEM – 32,931;
UX – 32,931;
TOTAL – 169 338.

Under loads, the temperature of the battery and processor can rise to 42 and 57 degrees, respectively. These values are fixed during a 30-minute game session in Asphalt 9: Legends.

If you conduct a throttling test, the device shows excellent results. After 15 minutes of continuous testing, the value of the oscillation performance is in the range of 80-100% of the maximum. At the same time, the highest battery temperature was fixed at 42 degrees Celsius, and the processor – 85 degrees Celsius.

But most importantly, due to the optimization and processor from Qualcomm, the device shows excellent results in games. So, Call of duty allows you to enable very high detail settings (maximum) with all the effects and at the same time manages to work quite smartly. The game looks just great, which is surprising for a device of this price category. Earlier, I tested this project on smartphones with a Kirin 710 processor – and there, with the price of devices at one and a half – two times more expensive, I managed to set only the minimum settings in this game.

Pubg in turn, sets balanced graphics settings, showing a stable frame rate.

World of Warships Blitz works at maximum graphics settings of 60 FPS.

World of tanks blitz It produces about 50 FPS at maximum settings with HD textures and improved sound, but can greatly reset the frame rate when a lot of smoke effects from burning tanks appear in the frame.

The hardest game for Realme 5 was an arcade race Asphalt 9: Legends. She herself sets the level of detail, which can be balanced by changing the priority in the settings. Judging by advanced effects, such as real-time reflection of objects on the pavement, in Realme 5, the game uses high internal settings. By default, it slows down significantly, but if you enable priority for a stable frame rate, you can play normally with very beautiful graphics. However, when there are a lot of cars and damage on the screen, the smartphone may start to slow down.

Mortal kombat Gives the device Android B + rating, setting the graphics to high, but not maximum settings. In this case, the game runs smoothly.

Star Conflict Heroes It goes very smoothly, but this is not surprising, since the game is well optimized even for the most budget smartphones.

Realme 5 can play videos without delays and lags up to 4K 60 FPS. Of course, because of the HD + screen, you will not see all the details that are noticeable on FullHD – UltraHD displays.

If you try to include a 4K 60 FPS HDR file, the picture starts to freeze when the sound is working. And since the screen does not have HDR support, such videos look almost discolored.

Realme 5 has a unique camera by the standards of budget smartphones. The manufacturer used four modules at once: the main module at 12 MP with an aperture of F1.8, the module for wide-angle shooting at 8 MP (angle of 119 degrees) with an aperture of F2.25, the module for macro 2 MP with shooting at a distance of 4 cm from the subject, and also a 2MP depth module.

The main module has several AI-based improvers, night mode, 10x digital zoom, phase detection autofocus, portrait mode, expert mode and panoramic shooting (180 degrees).

Photos come out of good quality with flowers similar to natural. In portrait mode, a bokeh effect is added.

At night, the dark sky can be covered with artifacts, and small details, especially in motion, are lost. But in general, the image level for a budget employee is good.

Frames taken with a wide-angle module are less clear, but I have seen worse in more expensive models. The smartphone uses calibration technology to reduce the amount of soap during such a survey, and it does a good job of it.

Macro shooting allows you to accurately capture small objects almost close to, but it’s better not to activate it manually, but use focus so that the smartphone itself turns on this mode using AI.

A 13 MP selfie camera with an aperture of F2.0 takes high-quality pictures and works well during video chats.

The main camera module allows you to record video up to 4K 30 FPS. The videos are clear, but the smartphone lacks good optical stabilization.

Wide – maximum at 1080p. Shooting at 60 FPS is not supported, but you can make videos with the effect of slowdown (720p only) or time acceleration.

Smartphone supports Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, Nfc, Fdd-lte 1/3/5/7/8/20/28, TD-LTE 38/40/41, Wcdma B1 / B5 / B8 and GSM 850/900/1800/1900.

Realme 5 – An excellent budget employee with a good filling for its price, which surprises with a high-quality quad-camera, a huge battery, support Nfc, Bluetooth 5.0 and the ability to play games on high graphics settings on the big screen. Budget sound and HD + resolution spoil the experience a bit, but overall, if you need an inexpensive work tube, this will be a great buy solution.
