Ray tracing for everyone: Microsoft introduced DirectX 12 Ultimate

American company Microsoft officially introduced the new version of the API set, which was called DirectX 12 Ultimate. The announcement took place as part of the presentation DirectX Innovation Day.

According to representatives of the IT giant, the new set will support absolutely all the functions that next-generation graphics equipment can boast. This is about DirectX Raytracing 1.1, Variable rate shading, Mesh shader, Sampler feedback etc.

DirectX 12 Ultimate will also provide a major breakthrough for AMD and its proposals based RDNA 2. Prior to this, the company’s products noticeably lagged behind the opportunities offered by a competitor in the face of Nvidia. The latter offered the above features, but Microsoft will release them as a single package, available to all manufacturers.

DirectX 12 Ultimate will support PC-based Windowsas well as the console Xbox Series X. At the same time, Microsoft assures that the new set of APIs will not affect the compatibility of future games with existing hardware, but will unify the graphics platform, making it easier for game developers to port their projects.
