The project about the Helstrom family had a difficult fate. Disney at first for a long time did not give the green light to development, and then with rearrangements in Marvel television and internal difficulties, the Mickey Mouse corporation generally tried to bury the project, depriving it of the subtitle “Marvel” due to fears of negative associations of the horror series with the universe of superheroes.
The script itself suffered in the process, from which several direct associations with the demonic character of the father of the family were removed, who turned from a devil into a dangerous serial killer. At the same time, Damon’s sister became just Ana instead of Satan. However, despite heavy pressure, fixes and censorship, the first season Helstrom came out as a solid supernatural drama with interesting characters and several unexpected plot twists.
According to the script, Ana and Damon were separated in early childhood. The boy was taken under the guardianship of the Catholic Church, and the girl was looked after by a guardian closely associated with the anti-demonic organization “Blood”. The boy grew up within the walls of a mental hospital, where his mother, possessed by a demon, was observed all these years. But the children grew up and one day everything changed, and it seems that the ghosts of the past are trying to reconnect Anu and Damon, and at the same time, to gain control over the world.
The dangerous father of the family is alive, and the demon inside the mother breaks out. And the brother and sister, who have not seen for a long time, will have to step over past grievances and try to stop their father. However, everything is not what it seems …
Tom Austin and Sydney Lemmon fit perfectly into the supernatural drama as key characters, and Alain Uye just perfectly suited to the position of an assistant cold-blooded Ana.
The plot develops as chamber as possible, but the authors perfectly keep the tense atmosphere, throwing up unexpected solutions and new villains. Tom and Sidney look quite harmonious in their roles and do not cause rejection, although the first in his game is somewhat reminiscent of the charming Tom Ellis from “Lucifer”, but clearly falls short of the level of charisma.
The series is presented on Hulu, but the authors have largely avoided SJW standards, and the only gay character is an integral and well-founded part of the plot. It’s hard to say right now if the second season of the project will ever see the light of day, but the first part is one of the rare occasions when a TV show across the Marvel universe hasn’t been disappointing.
