PS5, it seems, will not be backward compatible with all games for PS4 at the start, but they don’t mention about past generations

At the start in the fall of 2023 Playstation 5doesn’t seem to get backward compatibility with every game for Playstation 4. This conclusion can be made after today’s presentation by the leading platform architect. Mark Zerni, who revealed the full specifications of the console.

Zerny said that Sony tested on the PlayStation 5 the one hundred most popular games for the PlayStation 4. The company expects that in the fall “almost all of them” will work on the PlayStation 5.

In total, more than 4,000 games have been released on the PlayStation 4. Sony intends to “continue testing and expanding backward compatibility”.

“Recently, we decided to take a look at the 100 best PS4 games in terms of total game time; we expect that almost all of them will be available for launch on the PS5 immediately after the launch of the new console. Over 4,000 games have been released for the PS4, and we will continue to test and expand backward compatibility, “- it says on the official PlayStation blog.

As the specialist explained, some games are more difficult to run on the PlayStation 5 due to the fact that the new platform is “too fast.” Such releases will require individual additional debugging and tuning.

At the same time, Zerny did not mention any graphic improvements launched for backward compatibility on the PlayStation 5 games and generally paid little attention to this aspect..

Sony also does not say a word about the backward compatibility of the PlayStation 5 with other generations of the PlayStation. It is not known whether it will be possible to launch hits on it from PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 on it.

Sony’s main competitor, Microsoft, pays great attention to the backward compatibility aspect. Command Phil Spencer promises that the Xbox Series X will launch games with the Xbox One (full backward compatibility with all releases and accessories), the Xbox 360 and even the original Xbox with automatic improvements that do not require patches from developers. In addition, thanks to a special algorithm, the Xbox Series X will be able to add HDR effects to old SDR games.

“Of the obvious pluses you can wait for are increased startup and download speeds of the games themselves for backward compatibility, a more stable frame rate, higher resolution and overall picture quality,” – from a Microsoft article about the Xbox Series X.

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are expected in the fall of 2023.
