Praised and scolded: Original Mafia author Daniel Vavra played the remake and shared his impressions

Creator of the first part Mafia Daniel Wavra in July he spoke impartially about the remake of the game, but nevertheless played it and shared his impressions. The developer expressed his opinion about the updated project as part of a charity broadcast on the occasion of the launch of the game, conducted by a Czech streamer Agraelus

  • Vavra praised the directing of the remake and the good voice acting, especially noting the Czech localization. He also praised Lost Haven’s updated graphics and redevelopment;
  • At the same time, he was not delighted with the addition of shooting from cover to the game, since this, in his opinion, makes the battles more passive;
  • He also did not like the fact that there were too many opponents in the “Country Walk” mission with a truck chase. According to him, the original Mafia was made in such a way as to keep the number of murders to a minimum, and the complexity was achieved due to artificial intelligence and high destructive power of weapons, rather than crowds of enemies. In addition, in the original, some missions were longer, although the locations themselves and the number of opponents were less;
  • Another controversial point for Vavra seemed to be the physical model of the machines. The developers tried to imitate the controls from the original game, but in the remake the cars enter the skid not because they are difficult to control, but because they were made that way. He showed this by the example of a situation where he accelerated on a wet road in the rain and began to wiggle sharply from side to side, but at the same time he could control the car, whereas in the original the car would have gone into a skid;

  • But Vavra was especially disappointed that when rewriting the script, some of the iconic quotes that made up the moral of the story were missing. This concerns Sam’s dying words “Friendship is not worth nichrome” and, apparently, the subtitles in the final scene;

  • At the same time, the developer admitted that he would now change most of the script himself. Vavra wrote the plot of Mafia at 23, and it was his first time making a story. In particular, it seems to him that Morello, the main antagonist of the game, is not enough in the original;
  • What Wavre also liked was the way the developers paid attention to different details that better reflect that era, whether it was news in the newspapers, comments on the radio or conversations in the car, touching on the Great Depression, unemployment and people’s inability to pay rent. as shown in the mission “Dustless Work”;
  • Among other advantages, he noted the decision of the developers to pay more attention to Sarah and cut out an awkward sex scene with her. He also liked the work of the actor who played Tommy, while the role of Paul, in his opinion, was played poorly.
  • Looking back, Vavra also sees now that Salieri’s bar is not the most unfortunate location, since the game, in fact, forces you to move to targets along the same routes. He believes that it should be located on the central island.

During the broadcast, Wavra also shared some previously unknown facts about Mafia’s sequel development. It turned out that initially he wanted to release the second part only on PC 2 years after the original, using the same engine, while with the third part he was planning to expand to the full and make it a big next gen title for the new generation consoles of that time.

He even wrote several scripts for Mafia 3, but none of them ended up being used in the released game. Two years of work have gone to smark. Vavra himself left 2K Games due to creative differences over the sequels.
