PlayStation 5 will not support SSD expansion at launch

Sony engineers provide expandable memory Playstation 5 via the internal M.2 NVMe PCI Express 4.0 slot, however, the option to install an additional SSD will not be available at console launch.

The company confirmed this information in the comments to the publication The vergeInternal SSD expansion will be unlocked in a future update

That said, this news shouldn’t come as a big surprise, since back in March at the technical presentation of the PlayStation 5 Mark Cerny mentioned that memory expansion may become available “a little later” after the console starts. Cerny then cautioned players against buying M.2 drives until Sony tests third-party SSDs for PS5 compatibility. At the moment, the company has not yet announced a list of approved SSDs.

According to rumors, the amount of usable space on the internal storage of the PlayStation 5 is 667 GB… To save space for new games, old PS4 titles can be installed on external USB drives.

In turn, the Xbox Series S / X will have the option of expanding memory from day one. Along with the consoles, Seagate’s proprietary 1TB SSD cards will be available for $ 220.
