A full presentation died out last week Playstation 5. During his show Sony introduced many new games, prepared a couple of surprises and finally allowed ordinary users to take a look at how its new game system will look.
In honor of such an important event, the Executive Director Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan gave a new interview to the BBC, where he shared his opinion about the past show and what fans of the PlayStation should expect in the future.
Tell us about the design of the PlayStation 5, please? The console looks like it has a place in some fashionable furniture salon, and not in the electronics department.
PlayStation consoles are confidently located in living rooms around the world, and it was very important for us to make the outer shell so that it could fit in well with the interior. At least that’s exactly what we sought. I think we have succeeded.
How important are exclusive projects such as Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Gran Turismo 7 for the new console?
Exclusives are what distinguishes our consoles from the competition. But I always pay general attention to the quality of performance of these games, and not their availability on only one specific device. When you look at our internal teams, you understand that it is precisely the impressive results of their work that have real value.
Now, the attention of many industry leaders is focused on improving graphic effects and reducing download speeds. But what else can offer users a new generation?
3D sound technology is a real step forward. Features of the new controller that need to be tested in person is another leap into the future. The same can be said about the SSD-drive, which allows you to instantly change the game worlds and remove the need for downloads.
We tried very hard to demonstrate all this in a demonstration of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. In that video, Ratchet literally jumps from one world to another. On the previous generation, such transitions are impossible, they would have to be hidden by downloads, but here it all happens absolutely seamlessly.
Previous generations have always been about a more powerful visual part, improvements to the central processor. But this time, we can offer a number of features that, together, will give an unlike anything sensation and allow the developer to create truly unique things.
Your last presentation turned out to be somewhat atypical – high-profile PlayStation hits stood in line with games from small studios. What dictated this decision?
It was necessary that AAA-development presented the power of the PlayStation 5 in all its splendor. But at the same time, projects from modest teams in a curious way harness other strengths of our console. We tried to demonstrate the system from different angles. And this is just the beginning – now there are still a lot of new games in development.
The PS5 will ship in two versions. The traditional and digital Digital-Only, where there will be no disk drive. Does this mean a serious price difference between the two options?
You will not hear anything from us today about the cost. But a very significant part of the audience prefers digital shopping. Therefore, our company has done exactly what we are used to doing for all these years – we offer users a choice.
As you know, your show was supposed to take place a week ago, but the situation in the US forced you to change the original plan. And what about the content of the presentation itself – it somehow changed due to the situation in the world?
No, the presentation content has remained unchanged.
Considering the unstable economic situation in the whole world, you think that now is the right time to launch PlayStation 5?
The common sense and experience of past years clearly demonstrate that our business is able to survive such crises. But taking into account the situation, I admit that we will need to spend a lot of effort in order for the PlayStation 5 to be a truly valuable investment for the audience. I’ll pay attention that I’m making an important distinction – this is not about the price of the console.
I mean, we will try our best to make the PS5 live up to expectations and offer a high-quality library of games. Games must be different, they must be of high quality and there must be a lot of them. This is what will attract users.
