PlayStation 4 made Sony rich – over 113 million consoles sold, PS Plus subscribers growing

Company Sony Interactive Entertainment released a financial statement for the second quarter of the current fiscal year ended September 30, which states that sales Playstation 4 continue to decline, but the demand for games and services remains at a very high level. The PlayStation division is the flagship of the corporation and generates more revenue than all other divisions

From July to September, Sony sold 1.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles worldwide… A year earlier for the same quarter – 2.8 million. Total circulation is 113.8 million

The demand for games continues to grow. Sony and its partners sold 80.9 million copies of PlayStation 4 games in the second quarter… For comparison, in July-September of the last financial year, this figure was 70.6 million.

12.4 million of those 80.9 million are Sony Interactive Entertainment games sales… The company did not provide updated information on the number of sold copies of The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima.

PlayStation Plus’ subscriber base peaks in service history – 45.9 million (at the end of September 2019 there were 36.9 million, and at the end of June 2023 – 44.9 million).

In terms of finance, July-September 2023 is the best second quarter in Sony Interactive Entertainment history in terms of operating profit and the second highest in terms of revenue

Revenue increased 11.5% year-on-year to 506.6 billion yen ($ 4.77 billion), while operating income jumped 61.4% to 104.9 billion yen ($ 0. 98 billion). The main driver is the digital segment.

Since its debut, the PlayStation 4 has consistently surpassed the PlayStation 2 in terms of console sales, but at the end of September 2023, it fell behind it for the first time, as shown in the graph below:

Nevertheless, in terms of profitability, the PlayStation 4 surpasses the second PlayStation several times. Over the years, people have started buying more games, Sony exclusives are now selling in much larger numbers, digital distribution and services that the PlayStation 2 lacked are generating huge revenue.
