Journalist Bloomberg Jason Schreyer spoke about the reasons for the separation of the studio Bungie and publishers Activision in 2019. According to him, one of the key foundations for the conflict was completely opposite views on the further development of the Destiny franchise.
The problem was that Bungie wanted to focus on the service development of one game – releasing new seasons and updates for years, taking into account player reviews, while Activision needed regular sequels, completely new license plates, in between which there would be extensions for actual games.
With the departure from Activision, Bungie is implementing its Destiny vision on Destiny 2. It porting the game to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and is now engaged in the creation of three large extensions at once. The last one, Lightfall, is due out in late 2023.
In a correspondence with readers, Schreier noted that if Bungie stayed with Activision, instead of Destiny 2: Lightfall (2023), she would have cooked Destiny 4.
He also said that Destiny 2 never brought the “megabyte” revenue that the publisher was counting on. But Bungie herself, who is now independently operating the game, seems to be more than happy with the numbers.
In 2019, Schreyer toldthat the news about the breakdown of relations with Activision Destiny developers met with “joyful screams.” He wrote that they dream of developing a franchise without the strict supervision and requirements of Activision, working exclusively on the community. Then the journalist urged not to expose the publisher as the only “scapegoat” in this situation, since Bungie also made many mistakes while dealing with Destiny.
“And Bungie was just as happy about breaking up with Microsoft in 2007.”
Destiny 3 is not planned for today.
