Nextgen with nuances: Digital Foundry tested Gears 5 on Xbox Series X

YouTube channel authors Digital foundry were able to get acquainted with the updated version of the game Gears 5 for next generation console Xbox series x… And the results are very entertaining.

In the storyline campaign, the game produces a fairly stable 60 frames per second (this also applies to cutscenes). However, there is a small freeze bug that the developers promise to fix. But this allowed us to try out the technology of dynamically changing the refresh rate (Variable Refresh Rate), which allows you to level the problem with freezes (the function must be supported by TVs).

As for the resolution, it is dynamic. On average, the most powerful console Microsoft Gears 5 produces 1792p, and the maximum value is 4K. The minimum bar is fixed at 1080p. In cutscenes, the resolution can drop to 1440p.

In multiplayer, dynamic resolution works even more aggressively, which is associated with the goal of achieving stable 120 frames per second. Gamers will also be pleased with the technology to reduce input lag (by about 30-50%).

In the split-screen, the performance indicator is reduced to 30 frames per second in order to preserve the picture quality.

Concerning Xbox series sthen the maximum resolution will be 1440p. However, DF representatives have not yet been able to verify this. Instead, they assumed the minimum would be 720p – like on the base Xbox One. This has already provoked a scandal, as many players misinterpreted this information.

At the same time, do not forget about visual improvements: lighting, textures and shadows in high resolution, increasing the details of the environment, reflections and drawing distance. However, the final result is still inferior to the PC version, where a more demanding reflection solution is used.

Gears 5 does not yet fully support the architecture Velocityhowever, the average download speed still dropped from 45 seconds to 8 seconds.

Many people are interested in the ray tracing issue. Gears 5 supports new technology that was recently integrated into Unreal Engine… This is about Screen Space Global Illumination (SSGI) – Calculation of global illumination based on ray tracing technology. Given the high resource consumption, the resolution had to be halved, but at the same time there are up to eight beams per pixel.

This makes the lighting and shadows more realistic. This is especially noticeable in dark rooms. However, there is also a serious drawback – in the cutscenes SSGI had to be turned off.

Gears 5 will also showcase the technology’s capabilities Variable-Rate Shading (VRS). We are talking about shading optimization, which saves resources (5-12%) with minimal loss of image quality.
