new maps, pumping heroes, story campaign, PvP and much more – review addiction

Within the framework of the exhibition BlizzConline developers from Blizzard made an almost 40-minute presentation Overwatch 2sharing a lot of new details.

New maps and PvP

  • Two new maps – Rome and New York.
  • The new hero Sojourn uses an automatic rifle with an alternative fire mode in the form of a rail gun.
  • The authors are making experimental changes to PvP. The team is experimenting with passive abilities for roles.
  • Tanks got knockback resistance and reduced ult charge for those who shoot at them.
  • Damaging heroes have their movement speed increased.
  • And support characters – slow automatic health regeneration (after taking no damage for a certain period of time).
  • Tanks are being reworked to make them more suitable for melee battles, and not just sponges to damage the enemy.
  • For example, Reinhardt gained two charges of Fire Strike and a more controlled Charge with the ability to mark it.
  • All of these experiments may not make it to the final version.
  • Melee fast attacks have been reworked with better hit reaction animations and more impressive sound effects.
  • Weapon sounds have also been reworked. The sound changes noticeably depending on the environment, and the cannons loudly report that they are running out of ammunition.
  • Developers can replace existing modes, including Capture Points.

Hero Missions Mode

  • Hero Missions is a replayable co-op PvE mode designed to appeal to players less interested in competitive modes.
  • Hero Missions are designed to level up heroes (see below).
  • The team plans to make hundreds of Hero Missions. However, they will not feel like a grind.
  • Hero Missions include plot elements. You can play as any character.
  • All existing maps are used in Hero Missions.
  • Some maps will get completely new zones. For example, the minecart on King’s Row will have to travel a slightly different path than usual.
  • Hero Missions maps will be playable at different times of the day – day, sunset and night.
  • Hero Missions will also get dynamic weather changes, including sandstorm, blizzard and rain.
  • Weather conditions will be indicated on the world map before the start of the mission, which will allow you to choose the right hero
  • One of the Hero Missions is called Gather and Return. Players need to collect canisters all over the map and return them to the marked places. Other mission types are called Wall of Death, Scavenger Hunt, and Kill Quest.

Campaign

  • The Overwatch 2 Campaign is about how Overwatch members got back together to find out who is behind the second Omnic Uprising.
  • Each mission includes a cinematic intro and outro with smooth transitions to and from gameplay.
  • Music themes have been created for every playable hero and every location.
  • Each story mission takes place on a specially created map. They are described as “absolutely gigantic”.
  • On a map of India, a team escapes from a temple when fire causes map elements to fall apart, guiding players through corridors and wide open spaces. This is one of the biggest maps in Overwatch history.
  • The map of Gothenburg includes a location located inside Thorbjörn’s workshop.
  • Events on the Toronto map take place during the Siege of Sector Zero during a blizzard, so snow will accumulate as you progress through the level. Friendly NPCs can be seen on the map.
  • The choice of heroes for missions is limited to a specific set of options. Available characters will receive cues, and different combinations will lead to different conversations and branching dialogues during the mission.

Leveling heroes

  • Hero progression for PvE has been significantly overhauled since the game debuted at BlizzCon 2019.
  • Now each character has been given separate talent trees.
  • Each tree is focused on a certain style of play, although there are no restrictions on pumping talents in different trees.
  • Reinhardt’s trees are called Crusader, Juggernaut, and Guardian, and Soldier-76’s are Commander, Rifleman, and Vigilante.
  • Each tree has received 7 talent levels.
  • Trees allowed developers to break their own established rules. For example, the Angel got resurrection back on the area.
  • Other new abilities include Junkrat’s dual grenade launchers, Angel’s ability to fire explosive charges from his staff, and Reinhardt’s ability to pin down multiple enemies at once.
  • In addition, thanks to talents, heroes’ weapons can receive new effects. Reinhardt’s Firestrike turns into Icestrike, and Junkrat’s traps are electrocuted.

Appearance of heroes

  • The developers have improved the technology of the fabric, and more advanced facial animation will allow the characters to be more expressive, especially in cinematics.
  • McCree has aged and also received a thicker beard and more armor.
  • Headlight’s armor has been given a more white color and a transparent visor to better show her emotions.
  • The Reaper and Widowmaker also received new costumes, and the latter’s hair was braided.

Opponents

  • The developers realized that PvE enemies were not interesting enough in the 2019 build, so the Null Sector was redesigned for more exciting battles.
  • Now opponents react better to hits and even lose body parts, but continue to fight.
  • Larger enemies have weak points that can be exploited.
  • Opponents’ reactions can cause chain reactions. Once in one enemy, he can collide with another. In this way, you can eliminate entire rooms of enemies if you use the right abilities.
  • The team is experimenting with elite enemies who not only gain additional health or damage, but also new weapons, abilities or behavior.
  • A normal enemy can shoot slowly and collapse after death, while an elite one will fire bursts and try to crawl up to the player and explode when defeated.
  • In different missions, completely different types of enemies will appear.
  • Breacher, for example, is a walking bomb that moves slowly towards its target and must be destroyed before transforming and detonating.
  • Puller is a blindfolded opponent equipped with three balls that act as a tractor beam.
In an interview with IGN, Overwatch 2 Development Lead Jeff Kaplan noted that the team intends to be more communicative with the audience. Perhaps new details of the game will be shared in March or April.

So far, Overwatch 2 doesn’t even have an approximate release date.
