Debut studio project Variable state entitled Virginia featured an unexpected plot about the journey of an FBI agent in the world of dreams and nightmares, mixing several genres and well-developed characters. Five years later, the team Jonathan Burroughs and Terry Kenny presented her next interactive adventure, which not only came out on all major platforms, but also immediately fell into the directory of the subscription service Xbox Game Pass…
Unlike the previous game, this time Variable State relies on parallel storytelling and narration from the perspective of several heroes who join forces together in the final chapter. Outside the window is modern London, where three central characters intersect in an ordinary subway. Each of them has its own problems and flaws, which are embodied in personal stories ranging from mystical horror and comedy drama to sci-fi detective.
The first character introduced, John, is a single father with an interracial daughter. He recently suffered a heart attack and is constantly bullied by his boss at work. His carefree neighbor Jack leads the relaxed life of a game designer, with only a messed up post that brings them together every morning until one day they swap bodies. Further adventures are filled with comedic skits and sudden experiences.
The second heroine is the domineering Mina. Former special agent, now an employee of a military company. She devoted her entire career, but her family life is not going well at all. A short affair is getting out of control, and her beloved father is addicted to drugs, and an unknown person begins to blackmail her. Around these events, a chain of coincidences is brewing that lead to a global conspiracy.
The third participant in the story is high school student Donna, whose life resembles a nightmare under the supervision of an overbearing older sister and part-time police officer. Once sneaking out of the house with her best friends Becky and Vivec, Donna watches the mystical disappearance of people, which pushes her to a rash crime.
