New base, 13 heroes and differences with XCOM – details of Marvel’s Midnight Suns – review addiction

According to the designer Jake SolomonMarvel contacted the authors XCOM after the release of the sequel. During the call, the studio representatives were commenting on the final mission of the second game with might and main, leaving their comments.

This immediately showed Solomon that they really understood what kind of games she was doing. Firaxis – and were personally interested in success.

Although the idea for the Midnight Suns did not belong to Solomon, it was based on one of his favorite comic plots about the team of the same name. A story titled Rise of the Midnight Sons started in comics in 1992 in the pro series Ghost rider

In the story, a group of antiheroes united to stop the mother of demons Lilith (appears in the trailer) who wanted to take over the world. Among the first were: Doctor Strange, Frank Drake, Morbius, Johnny Blaze and Blade.

In the game, users will take on the role of a new character, the Hunter, created specifically for the project. It will be possible to upgrade both appearance and superpowers of various types (light or dark) – there are more than 40 of them, and some of them repeat the capabilities of popular heroes.

Speaking of which, 13 playable Marvel stars will appear in the Midnight Suns. Characters were taken from different teams, including Avengers, X-Men, Runaways etc. Among them:

  • iron Man
  • Captain America
  • Captain Marvel
  • Doctor Strange
  • Blade
  • Niko Minoru
  • Magic
  • Robbie Reyes (Ghost Rider)
  • Wolverine.

On a mission, the player goes with three superheroes, whose general abilities develop over time. In between missions, it will be possible to explore the Abbey base from the third person, also created specifically for the game.

In these breaks, they will allow you to strengthen the bonds between the heroes, communicating with them. And everyone needs their own approach. Reyes loves games, Captain Marvel loves sparring, and Tony Stark loves cards.

You can choose the style of communication, give gifts and the like. Some social platforms will appear around the base, visiting which will also help improve relations.

Midnight Suns do not share any mechanics with XCOM – for example, there is no permanent death in the game. According to Solomon, the authors do not consider this option appropriate in such a fantastic setting.

In addition, in the game, users will have to fight many enemies at the same time using powerful attacks. You will also need to interact more with the environment – jump from cars, rip off lanterns, throw objects across the entire map, and so on.

The scale of the action was one of the reasons for the change in approach to mechanics – it’s just a different type of plot and world compared to XCOM. Initially, the authors tried to create something similar, but this approach simply did not work.

The Midnight Suns gameplay will be shown on September 1, and the release will take place in March 2023 on PC (Steam and EGS), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch.
