Negotiations to buy an American business TikTok between Microsoft and ByteDance suspended. According to WSJ citing knowledgeable sources, US President Donald Trump said that he did not support this deal, because the companies took a time out to clarify the situation for themselves.
Apparently, the reason for the breakdown of the negotiations was Trump’s statement on Friday about the “immediate” blocking of TikTok. However, top managers hope that the situation will still change for the better. After all, the parameters of the transaction meet the requirements of the American government.
The source also says that initially the White House participated in the negotiations and sought to make TikTok “American”. Therefore, Trump’s actions came as a surprise to the parties to the deal. At the same time, it has not yet been reported about the signing of the corresponding decree – perhaps it was just an attempt to put pressure on the Chinese.
Note that within the framework of the deal, it is planned to sell a controlling stake and a minority stake. ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming wanted to keep the latter.
