Microsoft and Epic Games Don’t Say Unreal Engine 5 Demo Works on Xbox Series X – review

The developers, using the example of a new generation console, showed various features of the engine, including the speed of loading objects from a high-speed SSD, Hollywood-quality assets and a new method of working global lighting without “baking”.

Epic Games has already publicly announced that it worked on a demo (and engine) in close collaboration with Sony. However, Kotaku reporters wondered if the project could launch on the Xbox Series X. The studio refused to answer the question.

We just don’t launch it on the Xbox Series X.

According to the developers, the demo was developed for the PlayStation 5 to demonstrate certain features. Nevertheless, different technologies like Niagara special effects, Chaos physics and Nanite geometry are created for all platforms, including the Xbox Series X.

Microsoft also could not answer the question: the corporation only reported that the graphics shown in the demo version can be expected from games on the next generation consoles. Moreover, most Xbox Studios work on games based on Unreal Engine (without specification, on version 4 or 5 of the engine).

An early version of Unreal Engine 5 will be released in early 2023, and by the middle of the year Fortnite will begin the transition to a new version of the engine.

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are coming out at the end of the year. The hardware of the consoles is noticeably different from each other: Sony relies on a very fast SSD (up to 9 gigabytes per second) and a variable frequency of the CPU and GPU, while Microsoft is more likely to create a console with a lot of “bare power”.
