This week Sony allowed beta testers to install their own SSDs inside Playstation 5… By opening access to the slot M.2, the company also laid out a list of requirements for third-party storage devices. Thanks to the official website, it turned out that NVMe drives must have a PCIe 4.0 interface, a minimum read speed of 5.5 GB / s, have a volume of 250 GB to 4 TB and a width of no more than 22 mm.
After some time, it became known that the FireCuda 530 solid-state drives from Seagate and WD_BLACK SN850 from Western Digital were certified. Mark Cerny made a choice in favor of the latter.
The console architect tweeted that this is a great solution for a “very active family of two gamers.” Out of a couple of great options with speeds up to 7GB / s, Cerny settled on Western Digital with a heatsink.
Our solution to our very active two gamer PS5 household? His-and-hers SSDs 🙂

The cost of WD_BLACK SN850 in Russia as of July is from 10,990 rubles (for the 500 GB version without a radiator).
As for the FireCuda 530, its PS5 architect seems to have blessed it too, by tweeting a post asking if a drive from a competitor might be a worthy option.
Mike Fitzgerald, director of core technology at Insomniac Games, previously revealed that Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart’s download speeds with recommended SSDs are “nearly indistinguishable” from the original PS5.
