Learning to Live Together: Twitch Administration Updated Internal Rules – Introduced New Bans for Viewers

Largest gaming streaming platform Twitch presented to the public an updated set of internal rules designed to combat unscrupulous users and aimed at making the site’s community as welcoming and friendly as possible.

No critical changes to the policy of the resource administration Twitch did not introduce, but rather outlined the unspoken rules that have long been in force on the platform. So, now on broadcasts it is forbidden to show a number of symbols and signs carrying ideas of hatred and discrimination. Such images now include the swastika cross, as well as the Confederate flag, which in the United States is closely associated with conservative views of racism.

The ban also included such a concept as “blackface“- an act in which a person with a light skin tone makes up himself like a dark-skinned person in an attempt to portray or parody this or that character… Per “blakeface“Twitch has been actively banned before, but now the ban on such makeup is officially enshrined in the site’s rulebook.

Together with this on Twitch the norms of behavior in the chat of broadcasts have changed somewhat. Under the new rules, it is prohibited to express in any way ideas of oppression of racial, religious or social minorities. Similarly, comments that were regarded as sexual harassment fell under the block. For example, if you systematically send messages directed at the appearance of the host of the broadcast, you risk being banned.

At the same time, an important point applies to the usual Twitch traditions of using emoticons in chat. From now on, they should also be sent more accurately – out of context, many of them can be regarded as a racist joke or a mockery

All of the above changes will take effect on Twitch beginning with January 22, 2023… Accordingly, any penalties for violation of the new rules will be applied from this period.

Recall that a little earlier, the Twitch administration also made minor changes to the site’s tagging system. The mention of “blind walkthroughs” disappeared from the platform – some viewers might find it offensive.
