Kazuhisa Hashimoto, creator of the legendary Konami code, passed away

At the 61st year of life died Kazuhisa Hashimoto – the person who invented the most memorable cheat code in the history of the gaming industry, known as the code Konami. The first about the death of the developer was reported by his former colleague Yuji Takenoti, and later Konami itself announced a tragic event from its Twitter page.

“We’re sad to hear about the death of Kazuhisa Hashimoto, a very talented producer who first introduced the world to the Konami code. We condole Hashimoto-san’s family and friends. Rest in peace.”

Konami code first appeared in the arcade sidescroller Gradius 1986 release. Hashimoto was one of those responsible for porting the game from arcade machines to the home console Nintendo Entertainment System. During the production process and testing, the developer considered the game too difficult to complete, so he decided to add a cheat code to the game that would be easy to remember and make the game easier due to more lives and abilities.

Interestingly, the legendary cheat code remained in the release version of the game only for the reason that they forgot to remove it from there. Later, the “Konami code” began to appear in other games of both the company itself and third-party developers, becoming a kind of tribute to classic projects and at the same time an Easter egg.
