After success Requiem for a Dream Warner bros hired Aronofsky to create a new version of the story Dark knight. But the views of the director and the studio diverged.
The latter wanted to see in the main role someone more “smoothed out” – specifically Freddy Prince Jr.while Aronofsky insisted on the Phoenix candidacy. At that moment, the director realized that he and Warner Bros. wanted to achieve different results.
According to Aronofsky, his version of Batman was significantly different from the one that the studio eventually created and Christopher Nolan. Aronofsky’s story was reminiscent of “Taxi driver”, The French Connection and “Thirst for death”.
A well-known character comic book author worked on the script. Frank Millerwhose fan was the director. But even the writer himself was shocked at how gloomy the director’s version turned out to be. Apparently, Batman tortured his captives there and stuff like that.
Aronofsky justifies his vision by the fact that he wanted to move as far away from the previous film with the character as possible – “Batman and Robin”, – having developed a new version of a familiar plot.
Given the fact that Phoenix played many years later Jokers in the film, including the one inspired by Taxi Driver, this story is doubly ironic.
