Jim Ryan spoke about the start of PS5 sales in the midst of a pandemic, the launch of PS Now in Russia and the fight against Microsoft

In honor of the start of sales of a new generation console Playstation 5 on the territory of Russia head Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan was interviewed by the agency TASS, in which he spoke about the problems the company faced in the context of the global pandemic, as well as the regional policy of the platform holder.

As the top manager admitted, he does not advise anyone to organize the launch of the console in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The systems are manufactured in Asia, but due to illness, the production simply stood idle. At the same time, Sony staff worked remotely, literally controlling the release of equipment by cameras.

As for the shortage of systems at the start, Ryan believes that the manufacturers have managed to achieve incredible numbers. If there hadn’t been a pandemic, not much more PS5 consoles would have hit the market.

“Everything is sold out, absolutely everything is sold out. And everything will be sold out in Russia as well, there is no doubt about this,” he explained.

According to the forecast of the top manager, at the start of sales of the new generation consoles from Sony, they are mainly bought by those gamers who own the systems of the previous generation. Another 25% of the audience is formed by system owners from competitors and newbies. At the same time, Ryan added that competition with Microsoft extremely useful, because it keeps the company in good shape, and he does not like the term “console war” at all.

Commenting on Microsoft’s decision to buy a publisher Bethesda, he admitted that he does not yet know what will happen next. Sony itself prefers to bet on the unhurried but steady growth of in-house studios, which is sometimes boosted by purchases. Plus, PS4 sales prove that the AAA premium game model is doing just fine in the current environment.

Ryan comments on the increase in prices for games very strange. He does not like the policy of publishers who shift the costs of producing games onto the shoulders of consumers. That being said, video games are supposedly very cheap when you consider the price per unit time ratio.

“Even in Russia, we don’t just take the American price of the game and convert it into rubles at the exchange rate – we carefully plan our pricing policy,” he says.

Jim Ryan also commented strangely on Sony’s “answer” to subscription service Xbox Game Pass… Before that, the company talked about the unprofitability of such a project. However, the top manager said that Sony plans to share interesting news soon. However, he referred to the existence of a streaming service. PS Now, which is not yet available in Russia.

The problem with our country is associated with its large territory, where it is difficult to launch such services. In particular, we are talking about logistics and server placement so at a small distance from the players.

“How to outline the scope of the launch? Launch only in Moscow? Only in Moscow and St. Petersburg? It is very difficult to make a decision to provide services for some part of the PlayStation community, but not for some,” he explained.

Summing up, Jim Ryan shared a prediction that developers will unleash the full potential of next-generation consoles in 2023. He expects players to have a period as significant as 2015-2016 for PS4. It was then that the projects came out that determined the face of the system.
