“Iron race is a thing of the past” – Shigeru Miyamoto spoke about changes in the industry and the future of Nintendo

At a meeting with analysts and investors on the company’s latest quarterly financial report Nintendo, creator of Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda Shigeru Miyamoto spoke about the potential future of the gaming industry, the growing importance of the development of intellectual property, as well as the iron race and what position Nintendo itself has to take in all this.

The whole conversation began with a question from one of the investors who asked how the Japanese company plans to develop its existing and future IPs, as well as about Nintendo’s competitiveness in the IP-centric future, which many respected analysts have confidently predicted over the past couple of years. As it turned out, Miyamoto is aware of the changes that are brewing in the industry and believes that many familiar things, such as fighting in the field of iron solutions, are gradually fading into the background.

“Nintendo has long been considered an integral participant in the race for iron solutions in the field of gaming equipment. But, it seems to me, in recent years, discussions about a direct collision of Nintendo and other companies in this field have been less and less,” the cult developer pointed out.

Later, Miyamoto spoke about the intellectual property of Nintendo, assuring that the company plans to reserve exclusive rights to create games with cult heroes. At the same time, the top manager admitted that in the future, the Japanese giant will need to significantly expand its market coverage, for example, by investing in theme parks, full-fledged animated films and mobile projects. The Nintendo leadership began work in this direction several years ago, but the first serious results have yet to be seen.

“Only Nintendo developers can use Mario the way we want. We take the protection of our rights to maximum creative freedom in creating games very seriously. But there are understandable restrictions on the number of people who can get to know Mario only through traditional gaming systems. We are very proud of the brand’s recognition and plan to continue to acquaint more and more users with Nintendo characters while continuing to work on our unique designs, “Miyamoto explained.

According to statistics, more than 90% of the company’s business today is revenue from Switch sales and games for it. Mobile games, which Nintendo produces few, are mostly intentionally poorly monetized, which causes dissatisfaction among some investors. They believe that in a changing industry, Nintendo needs to work harder with new revenue streams.

Nintendo itself currently uses mobile software primarily as a tool for acquaintance of the masses with its IP, which then makes many users want to continue this acquaintance through full-fledged console games.

Earlier this year, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa expressed confidencethat traditional consoles will not disappear in the next ten years, but at the same time he emphasized that the company is closely following new trends so as not to be left behind.

Unlike Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo does not yet have any cloud gaming services.

Last spring, rumors circulated around the network that Nintendo might consider working with Microsoft in the cloud segment. In particular, the creation of its service at the facilities of Microsoft Azure. Sony at about the same time entered into a partnership with Microsoft to use Azure.

According to Phil Spencer, it is important for Microsoft that in the cloud world, gaming companies use its cloud technologies and a developed network of data centers, rather than similar solutions from Google and Amazon.
