Edition DigiTimes citing sources in the supply chain, reports that in the second half of next year Sony plans to launch production of the PlayStation 5 on a 6nm chip.
Adjustment… In the original post, due to a bug at VGC, we wrote that the current PS5 model runs on a 5nm chip, but in fact it uses a 7nm chip. Moving to 6nm will be a quantum leap – it will make the console more energy efficient, quiet and “cool”.
It is speculated that the company could make changes to the PS5 hardware to improve system production due to a shortage of semiconductors – as noted by journalists VGC, Sony representatives spoke directly about this outcome in a recent quarterly report.
The current PS5 is powered by AMD’s 7nm chip, while the subsequent redesign will use a modified 6nm variant.
It is difficult to guess at the moment whether this will be a new revision of the console or a redesign like the PS5 Slim.
