Last week it became known about the filing against Sony class action lawsuit due to massive complaints about controllers DualSense from Playstation 5… The crux of the problem boils down to the fact that some gamepads are prone to stick drift, as was the case with the Nintendo Switch.
Experts tried to figure out the reasons for the breakdown iFixit… They disassembled the DualSense controller and examined its design.
As it turned out, the problem is mechanical, not software. In total, four hardware factors have been identified that can cause involuntary movement of the sticks. Wear-out potentiometers, of which there are two per joystick, are named as one of the main reasons for the drift.… Over time, their wear leads to incorrect reading of the voltage on these parts, which translates into inaccurate recognition of movements on the screen.
In addition, the spring-loaded self-centering mechanism inside the joystick is prone to wear, which entails an additional problem. DualSense uses springs to return the joysticks to neutral, however slightly stretching them can eventually lead to a new neutral position. If this does happen, the center of the joystick may shift slightly and the potentiometers will incorrectly read its position.
The next point: stretching the plastic over the entire joystick during active play. However, iFixit believes this is more likely to result in less input accuracy than stick drift.
Finally, drift can be influenced by the most common dust accumulating inside the joystick mechanism.… iFixit and some other users have managed to eliminate the drift by cleaning the inside of the potentiometer with compressed air, contact cleaner and / or isopropyl alcohol, but this requires a complete disassembly of the controller, otherwise the dust will not be removed, but simply knocked out inside.
Overall, iFixit notes that there is no easy solution to DualSense drift. The problem will continue to appear in the future if Sony does not redesign the joystick mechanism, and users in any case will have to either fix the breakdown (on their own or with the help of an experienced technician), or send the controller to the manufacturer and wait for the repair (if it is covered by the warranty) or buy a new gamepad.
