This month the legendary Japanese company Sega celebrates his 60th birthday. For such a momentous occasion, the portal OTAQUEST talked to Toshihiro Nagoshia veteran Sega, now occupying one of the leading creative positions within the company. He is known to modern gamers as the father of a series of criminal action movies. Yakuza.
In an interview Nagosi shared thoughts about important moments of his career, a bright past Sega and what awaits the company in the future. But perhaps the most interesting moment of the whole conversation concerned the failure of the console Dreamcast.
Toshihiro Nagoshi admitted that he was in a state of absolute shock when Sega decided to leave the console market.
“Of course, I was just shocked. But it was far from the fact that our business was falling apart. There was another problem, a terrible act on our part – we betrayed the players who believed in us, who bought Dreamcast in the hope of getting a lot of bright games for many years to come. If you do not support the system with games, then it turns into an ordinary piece of plastic. I carried the burden of responsibility not only as a developer, but also as one of the leaders, “Nagoshi explained.
Amid the collapse Dreamcasttrying to maintain their market position as a mere publisher, Sega began to seek help from various third-party companies, including competitors in the console business. She wanted to quickly make partnership agreements with them and at the same time try to understand what their strength was.. The internal structure made a huge impression on Nagoshi. Nintendowhose consoles Sega decided to release games about Sonic.
“Leaving the console market for us was like losing the war. We were weaker than other companies. When I began to analyze the situation and think about our next steps, I decided that the most effective option would be to ask other market players for help and ask their opinions about exactly what we were wrong about. When I came to Nintendo, I had the opportunity to talk with a wide variety of people – from ordinary developers to the most senior managers. I even met with Mr. Hiroshi Yamauchi [третьим президентом Nintendo]which today is no longer with us.
And every time I asked questions, and it doesn’t matter to the employee what position, I received the same answers. A real shock. I have never met a company where absolutely all employees shared the same ideas and aspirations, where people worked as a whole. At SEGA, I was guaranteed to hear opposing opinions. I was very surprised how Nintendo managed to stay on its own wavelength, and then I thought to myself: “it’s not surprising that we lost to them.”
Today Toshihiro Nagoshi takes in Sega position of senior creative director, developing the series Yakuza and its branches, and also acts as the producer of a whole mass of various projects.
