When the studio decided to remove 30 minutes of timekeeping from the final version, it greatly angered the scriptwriter, because the logic of the story was violated and the film simply “did not work”
Representatives of the studio believed that Terrio was creating a too dark version of the story, but the author did not agree with them. He didn’t want to turn the plot into a normal brawl between two super-beings, plus there were even darker moments in the original version. For example, initially Batman continued to leave marks on criminals – and in the end he did it with Lex Luthor…
The writer argued a lot with the studio about this, as he believed that the character should eventually change for the better, moving away from his past violent inclinations. It was supposed to be a version of Batman that could put together Justice League…
Otherwise, this whole plot did not make sense.
The desire to “simplify” the concept of the tape slipped even in the title, which Terrio did not choose – he does not know at all who gave the film such a cumbersome title. The screenwriter found out about it from the Internet, like everyone else. The title, as it seems to him, was unfortunate and repelled the audience.
As a result, when the studio “cut” the film, the author did not respond to criticism of the script, since it was a distorted version of the plot. He understood that not everyone might like the tone or something else, but he could not answer for the torn text.
However, he nevertheless considered some criticism from professional reviewers inappropriate.
For example, a claim to the phrase Loiswhen she says: “I am not a lady, but a journalist.” One of the authors of the publications then wrote that Terrio did not understand the character and did not know how to write female characters at all.
From the point of view of Terrio himself, this is rather stupid, since this line was a reference to a journalist Mary Colvinwho died in Syria. And in real life she said an identical phrase (“There is no woman in this room, only a journalist”), and the screenwriter paid tribute to her.
Terrio argued with the studio about a whole slew of scenes, including the first episodes in Africa. He noted that you cannot make a film “simple” when you yourself initially take on “difficult” topics. There were many conflicts – once it got to the point that a certain investor representative took the screenwriter aside and began to lecture him on how to write a Batman story.
After the release of BPS, some of Terrio’s acquaintances in Hollywood stopped talking to him, as they considered him guilty of the film’s failure.
But the author liked working with Zach Snyder, who constantly discussed various ideas with him and was generally open to cooperation – and therefore Terrio wrote the script for Justice League…
When the League storyline was being created, a lot was still in the studio at the planning stage – no one consulted with the authors regarding the release order in the DCEU. Therefore, for example, the script “Wonder women” at that time it was not even finished yet, and many plot points had to be solved on the go. Terrio did not know about the past Diana and similar episodes.
The screenwriter, after Snyder left the project, was formally also “excluded from production” – with Joss Whedon he didn’t communicate. For the first time, Terrio saw the theatrical version a couple of weeks before the premiere – and became depressed, demanding that his name be removed from the credits.
According to him, the original concept was left with one “skeleton”, and a number of important points were simply killed. He was especially hurt by the way the branch was removed. Cyborgon which he worked very closely with Ray Fisher, discussing the place of the character in the world and culture for many hours.
He called the film “an act of vandalism.”
The studio protested the decision of the author, since at that time the promotional campaign of the tape was unfolding. Otherwise, the film might have been rescheduled. In the end, Terrio stopped fighting this and “waved his hand” – they did not invite him to the premiere.
Now Terrio is delighted with the release of the full version of “The League”, since this was his original script – and for it he is ready to answer. And the author is pleased that people were able to see the picture the way it was originally conceived.
But he is unlikely to return to work on large franchises anytime soon.
