For many, the word “cancer” sounds like a sentence. Chemotherapy, depression, pain, abandonment of the usual life – this is what many cancer patients go through. Cybersport.ru, together with the Konstantin Khabensky Charitable Foundation, has prepared a number of materials about children who will face this disease and win. We’ll tell you how caring for loved ones, your favorite video games, comics and fan affection can make your life bright and fulfilling, even if a difficult diagnosis appears on the medical card.

According to opinion polls, a third of Russians are convinced that cancer is incurable and always leads to death. This stereotype is dangerous, because it often leads to a late diagnosis of cancer. We want to change that. The Konstantin Khabensky Charitable Foundation, which helps children with cancer and other serious brain diseases, has launched a social project. Its purpose is to clearly demonstrate that cancer is not a sentence, # will be cured. As part of a social campaign, of which the project with Cybersport.ru became a part, hundreds of people talk about how they defeated oncology. You can find out their stories on raklechitsa.ru.
The hero of our first material is a 15-year-old schoolboy from Rostov, Maxim Evdokimov. Since 2011, he has shown signs of diabetes insipidus. In March 2017, during a planned hospitalization at the endocrinological research center in Moscow, he was diagnosed with a tumor. After the operation, he was diagnosed with the germinoma of the chiasm-sellar region. Then Maxim went through radiation therapy and chemotherapy. In August 2017, he completed treatment. He is now in remission, but he continues to be seen by doctors due to problems with diabetes insipidus.
This is what Maxim’s life looks like if you look at it through the prism of medical records. But we met with the other side of his life – one that is filled with dreams of journalism, computer games, football, Batman comics and a fanatic attachment to the roster Natus vincere by CS: GO.
“I was in the top 10 of the UFC ladder”
Initially, we planned not only to talk with Maxim, but also to play CS: GO together. However, due to quarantine, he remained in the village of his grandmother, where there was no computer. Therefore, we limited ourselves to just communication.
Maxim immediately broke the stereotype that it is difficult for schoolchildren to combine video games with study and additional classes. Despite the fact that he had to skip school due to illness, he is almost an excellent pupil – four in chemistry only. At the same time, Maxim was engaged in football and swimming at a serious level, according to which he has the third adult rank.
In the sixth grade, Maxim had to choose between the two sections, because training required more and more time and could not be combined. Despite the success in swimming, he preferred football. Now he goes every week for at least six workouts: three times with his year and three times with the main team. In this case, Maxim plays a lot of video games. It all started with an old title about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist for Sega. Later, he became interested in shooters – Turok and Doom. Along with football training, Maxim mastered sports simulators. And it turned out he was no worse than in traditional sport, and already at the age of 13 he participated in his first tournament.
But Maxim’s main e-sports achievements are related to the UFC 2 fighting game. He proudly said that he stayed in the top 10 best players of the world for a month. He didn’t succeed in breaking above ninth place, he says: “There were very tough guys there, it was very difficult to compete with them.” Love for UFC 2 in him woke up just in the most unpleasant period of his illness.
Most of all eSports games, Maxim loves CS: GO. To my question, when he manages to do it all, Maxim fervently answers: “Yes, there’s enough time for everything. From training I come closer to 11 pm, lessons have already been done by then. A friend is always waiting for me, and together we go to play CS: GO. ” Maxim even put together a CS: GO stack from the guys he plays football with. He said that at some point he really wanted to start training in order to try himself in e-sports.
But Dota 2 was not able to captivate Maxim. He says that friends have long tried to lure her into it, but to no avail. Therefore, Maxim’s acquaintance with MOBA games stopped at the stage of mobile counterparts like Mobile Legends. He has a special relationship with games for mobile devices, because during the exposure in Moscow, he only had a tablet with him, which helped him distract from the hospital situation.
“I want to become an e-sports journalist or a doctor”
It is difficult to call our conversation with Maxim an interview in the usual sense of the word. Rather, we just talked about video games, shared opinions about TV shows, players, bloggers, books, sports, and learning. At some point, Maxim asked how I became an e-sports journalist and what exams are needed to enter journalism, and our conversation turned to the topic of the future. Now Maxim is in the tenth grade and is already thinking about where to go to study after school. He chooses between two specialties: a dentist or a journalist. This is a rather unusual combination. If I understand the craving for journalism, then the desire to be a doctor, when you spend so much time as a patient, seemed to me rather strange, but Maxim explained everything.
Maxim’s journalism has long interested me – he wants to try himself as a commentator. Maxim said that when he watches football with his mother, he often turns off the sound and starts commenting on his own: “Mom says I’m doing pretty well.” He likes the manner of conducting the broadcast of Konstantin Genich and George Cherdantsev, and in the future he plans to reach their level.
Initially, Maxim was thinking specifically about sports journalism, but now e-sports has competed with football. True, my mom cannot yet evaluate attempts to comment on CS: GO: “And I am like this:“ S1mple opens with AWP in mid ”, but at that moment:“ Mom left the chat ”” (laughs).
If you can’t make it to the commentators, Maxim would like to become a reporter and go to international tournaments: cover the competitions and take post-match interviews with players. Now he plans to create his blog on YouTube about CS: GO and other games in order to gain experience.
“Boombl4 sings cool, and s1mple is simply the best.”
Maxim is a big fan of NAVI. According to him, he is trying to watch all their matches, although now in the village it has become difficult due to problems with the Internet. To my question, how does the game rate Perfecto, Maxim seriously answers that “for a start it’s not bad, and at the last tournaments he showed himself worthy”. But truly in Maxim’s fan heart Zeus, Boombl4 and s1mple. Although if you had to choose one pet, then he would be Kostylev.
Maxim didn’t pass over Boombl4’s vocal data: “Have you seen the video where he sings“ Beloved ”? It is very funny and cool. He is a cool guy. ”
Maxim is generally quite a thorough fan. He served a lot of matches held in Rostov, so he collected a large collection of fan trophies. For example, he has T-shirts and even joint photos with the players of his beloved Bavaria and the German national team: “My friends also gave me the victory ball from the 2017 Confederation Cup, which was given to them by Julian Draxler.”
But Maxim has no such e-sports trophies. He regularly attends football matches in his city, but he hasn’t come to Rostov for big esports yet. Maxim says that he would love to attend the CS: GO championship: “Yes, I’m ready as a volunteer: I will bring water to NAVI players and sweat sweat from s1mple’s forehead after a hard round” (laughs).
Maxim admits that he would very much like to receive a NAVI T-shirt, signed by all the players of the CS: GO roster: “I would put it in a frame, hang it on the wall and blow off dust particles” (laughs).
“My mom liked Assassin’s Creed.”
Maxim often mentioned his mother in a conversation. Together they went through the most difficult moments. She not only constantly went with him to Moscow to see doctors, but also became a true friend who shared all interests. Maxim said that they even played in the UFC together, although my mother did it badly and she always lost. She is absolutely loyal to her passion for video games. According to her, the games never prevented Maxim from studying and sports, therefore, she was not against her son’s hobbies.
“I did not forbid anything. It was a joy for us that there is a game and it can distract. He generally had a very difficult period, and his father died shortly before his illness. Therefore, we always did everything together. He taught me to play, and together with him I immersed myself in these games. I supported him and was not opposed – the games helped him and did not interfere with his studies, and he goes in for sports and returned to the football team after his illness, ”Svetlana Evdokimova, Maxim’s mother.
Together with his mother, Maxim read all the books on the Assassin’s Creed universe. According to him, mom liked it no less than he did. “I generally like Assassin’s Creed games. It seems to me that Black Flag is the best part of the series, ”says Maxim and adds that the books perfectly conveyed the plot and atmosphere of the original.
During chemotherapy, Maxim, thanks to his friend, became interested in comics and had already assembled an impressive collection.
Batman is his favorite character. Maxim really knows a lot about him. In addition to comics, he 100% passed the games of the Batman: Arkham series. I asked what Maxim thinks of Ben Affleck as Batman. He replied that, despite the fact that the films with his participation were criticized, Affleck himself showed the canonical Batman: “He perfectly suited this role: his chin, cheekbones – visually this is a direct hit on the image.” Maxim also shared this hobby with his mother, according to him, he took her to the movies at the last Marvel premieres, and also watched all the superhero films with her.
Now Maxim began to watch the series “The Witcher” and the first thing he called his mother was, so she also appreciated it. After my words that the books of Andrzej Sapkovsky are also quite good, Maxim promised after the series to go to them.
“After exposure I got an Xbox”
We spoke little about Maxim’s disease. He touched her casually, telling, for example, that the football coach did not allow him to be on the field for a long time and forbade him to play with his head after the operation. Speaking about trips to Moscow to doctors or about the period when he underwent chemotherapy, Maxim always focused on something pleasant, whether it be a video game, a comic book or a film with which he met at that moment. He was able to interest doctors with his hobbies.
Maxim left for a month in Moscow for radiation therapy, but even in a conversation about this period he recalls pleasant moments: “My mother and I had time to even go to St. Petersburg to meet friends, it’s fun there.” Maxim’s mother says that the disease could not change her son and now he is exactly the same as he was before her.
“You know, he did not fully understand what was happening. He understood that something was wrong with him, but … We survived some piece of hell. They lived it as though they had closed eyes, but it seems to me that he recovered, he again became the same as he was. It was as if he closed his eyes during an illness, and then opened it again ”, – Svetlana Evdokimova, Maxim’s mother.
Talking about games on the Xbox, Maxim casually mentions that the console was bought for him just in Moscow after radiation therapy: “We wanted to take the PS4, but it wasn’t there then, we had to take the Xbox. After that, for some time I even forgot about the computer. I managed to get through Battlefield and Call of Duty and just started chopping off in UFC 2. ” Maxim’s mom said that the Xbox, bought in Moscow, really really helped her son in a difficult period:
“As Maxim fell ill, we had a dream to buy an Xbox. Then there was chemistry, and we purchased a prefix. And so he plunged into games. He played before that, but at that moment it became his outlet from everything that happens, ”- Svetlana Evdokimova, Maxim’s mother.
Returning to Rostov in 2017 after radiation therapy, Maxim began to undergo chemotherapy. Only a tablet could be taken with him to the hospital, he helped Maxim get distracted: “I used to play on the tablet and play games, watch movies, and even read the Chronicles of Narnia for a week and a half.”
Maxim says that he would be glad to enter Moscow and move to the capital for good. He warmly recalls his trip to IgroMir in 2019 and walks around VDNH. In July of this year, Maxim will come to Moscow again for treatment. Most of all, he is upset that in the capital at this moment, probably, everything will be closed: “I would love to go to football or to something like IgroMir.” I generally like that in Moscow everything is so fast and there are a lot of cool events. ” I tried to cheer him up and said that if it didn’t work out this time, then after he arrived he would probably be able to get around everything he wanted in Moscow and even visit the NAVI tournament. “Yes … it would be great,” answered Maxim.
When we said goodbye, Maxim said that he was sorry that we could not play this time, but we could make up for it when he returned to the city. I warned that, as it turned out, my rank in CS: GO is much lower than his, so I will be of little use. This didn’t bother Maxim, and he assured that he was ready to cut it off anyway. And then I asked that at the next meeting with s1mple and Boombl4 I told them that they have one very devoted fan from Rostov.
