Gamers often become the protagonists of anime, but finding a really interesting series on this topic is not so easy. Before writing this article, I reviewed many titles and selected 15 stories that might be of interest to fans of video games and esports. Among them there are both popular TV series and little-known ones that you have hardly heard of. Bookmark this article and organize anime marathons. Happy reading!

Each anime is provided with a short description of the plot with my personal commentary. I tried to be as objective as possible, but remember that all people have different tastes and my opinion of the show may well differ from yours. The description may also contain minor spoilers that do not reveal the plot. Nothing that will not be clear after watching the trailer or the first episode.

“Sword Art Online”

Alternative title: Sword Art Online.
Duration: several seasons of 12-25 episodes + specials.

Based on the plot in 2023, Sword Art Online was released in the world – this is a new generation VRMMORPG with the possibility of full immersion, which is advertised as the pinnacle of game design. Thousands of Japanese gamers bought special VR helmets to participate in the launch of the first virtual world of Aincrad, but the joyful event turned into a terrible nightmare for them. Players are held hostage by SAO, trapped by a mad scientist-developer. They cannot exit the game on their own, and an attempt to remove the helmet leads to instant brain death due to a microwave discharge from the device. The only way to escape is to complete the RPG to the end, breaking all hundred floors of Aincrad, inhabited by creepy monsters and bosses. It is not so easy to do this, because the death of a character in the virtual world will immediately lead to the death of the player in reality.

I think most readers of this article are already familiar with Sword Art Online, or at least have heard of it from friends. Not surprisingly, SAO is a popular franchise that includes not only manga and anime, but many games as well. If you’ve never watched SAO, then by all means do it. I guarantee you won’t regret it.

Do not be fooled by the simple description of the plot, because it is much deeper than it seems at first glance. In addition, the writers manage to maintain the consistency of the narrative from season to season, maintaining the viewer’s interest in the story and, importantly, keeping understandable motives for all the characters. A very interesting title with a lot of dramatic arcs, touching stories, killer action and unexpected cliffhangers. The musical setting of the series is a reason to pay the lowest bow to the composers. In my personal rating, SAO ranks first among “gamer series”.

“Lord”

Alternative title: “Overlord” / Overlord.
Duration: three seasons of 25 episodes.

The plot of the “Overlord” begins with the fact that the administration of the legendary MMORPG “Yggdrasil” suddenly decides to close the game. There are only a few minutes left before the servers are shut down, so the head of the top guild “Ainz Ooal Gown” and one of the strongest lich mages of “Yggdrasil” named Momonga decides to take a walk through the halls of the clan citadel for the last time and say goodbye to his beloved NPCs. When the timer counts down to zero, something strange happens – Momonga remains in Yggdrasil, but not in the game anymore, but in some alternative world. The player reunited with his character, got his abilities and skills, but what to do now is not clear. To understand the situation, the main character decides to take over the world of Yggdrasil. This time, his assistants will be revived NPCs from among the guards of the clan citadel.

I watched only one and a half seasons out of three, but I can draw some conclusions now. In “The Overlord”, the storyline of the gamer is practically not revealed, which is why the series very quickly slides into an ordinary fantasy about a dark wizard and his retinue. Only short remarks of the protagonist remind of the connection with the game, when he talks about the old days or remembers his friends in the guild. The humor here is also specific and mainly tied to the relationship between Momonga’s subordinates. The authors also play up the dialogues in a funny way, when the main character speaks in public in the low and stern voice of the great commander, and in his head comments on what is happening in the squeaky voice of a child. A very funny trick that compensates for the lack of emotion on the face of the protagonist (this is due to the fact that Momonga is a skeleton).

“Overlord” really lacks a clear storyline. Sometimes one gets the impression that when writing the plot of some episodes, the scriptwriters simply threw the dice, choosing a random course of events. Many minor characters appear out of nowhere and disappear into nowhere. The main character’s motives are constantly changing: either he saves the village in the guise of a powerful sorcerer, then he becomes a mercenary and undertakes to carry out tasks of the guild of adventurers. Some episodes of the series are pure comedy with a bunch of gags, while others are more like a noir action drama. The authors of the series mixed a lot of things, but whether this went to the benefit of the title is a question for discussion. But the opening of the first season is really one of the best I’ve seen.

“Btum!”

original name: Btooom!

Ryota Sakamoto is a 22-year-old unemployed loser with a terrible temper who dropped out of school and sits on his mother’s neck. He has neither friends nor a girlfriend, and all that interests him in life is the computer game Btoom !. In the virtual world, Sakamoto is completely different – he is one of the best players in Japan, equal to thousands of gamers from all over the world. Sakamoto has always regretted having fame in Btoom! useless in real life, but once it played a cruel joke on him. After another won match, the main character fell asleep in front of the computer, and woke up … a few meters from the ground, hooked with parachute lines on a tree in the middle of an unfamiliar island. Sakamoto is at a loss – he does not remember how he got here and what happened to him the day before. There is only a bag with grenades, like in Btoom !, and a chip-sonar implanted in the hand. Now Ryota has to take part in a deadly game, the price of victory in which is his own life.

At “Btum!” a very simple, but at the same time organic plot that does not require any additional explanation. This is almost a classic “battle royale” like PUBG, with the only nuance that the participants’ only weapons are grenades. The latter, by the way, are of different types – incendiary, homing, with a timer, with a remote control, spraying toxic gas, etc. It is on the features of these grenades that the plots of episodes or battles between characters are often built. They have to fight not only for their lives, but also for containers with supplies and medicines, which are dropped every day from a helicopter flying over the island. Another trick of the scenario is that you don’t have to kill everyone you meet to win the battle – it is enough to collect a certain number of chips from the corpses. Prospects for team interaction of the participants are already opening up here, but as a “side effect of this mechanic” – intrigue, betrayal and drama. Just what you need for the plot.

Most of all in “Btum!” I was attracted by the setting. Finally, there was an anime about gamers, the events in which take place not in a fictional fantasy world and not in virtual reality. And there are also giant predatory monitor lizards, but I will not spoil you! One thing is bad: the creators of “Btum!” hoped to shoot several seasons, but so far only one has been released – and that one came out in 2012 …

“I don’t like pain, so I’m going to put everything in defense.”

Schoolgirl Kaede Honjo was never into VRMMO, but gave up under the persuasion of her best friend Risa and decided to try a new game. In real life, Kaede is small and shy, and is also very afraid of pain, so in a game with full immersion she decides to protect herself as much as possible and only pump the defense parameter. At first glance, the character of the main character turned out to be as ridiculous as possible – he moves slower than a turtle, cannot use magic and practically does not cause damage, but he can easily withstand the attacks of a whole crowd of monsters. Unexpectedly for Kaede, her unusual build turned out to be an imboy that even the game developers did not foresee. This is where the fun begins …

A very light anime, more aimed at a young audience. There are no love intrigues, deadly battles and other similar plot clichés, but there are interesting characters, good humor and a lot of funny gags. This is a story about friendship and adventure, about new acquaintances and teamwork. Anime will help you switch and take a break from some dark dramatic plots. On the Internet, you can find a lot of criticism about this series, but always remember that all people have different tastes, and you can only form an objective opinion on your own.

“Full life online”

Alternative title: Net-juu no Susume.

Морико Мориока — одинокая 30-летняя безработная геймерша, а также интроверт с полным набором комплексов. В реальной жизни ей очень тяжело дается общение с людьми, и даже простой поход в магазин превращается в настоящее испытание. А вот в игре все иначе. Там она знакомится с девушкой по имени Лили, с которой у них завязывается трепетная дружба. Проблемы вызывает лишь тот факт, что Морико играет за персонажа-мужчину и скрывает свой настоящий пол, поэтому не может быть до конца откровенной с виртуальными друзьями. Однако у Лили тоже есть секрет, ведь за этого персонажа играет симпатичный парень.

В этом списке сериалов есть аниме, которые явно больше подойдут для детей, но «Полноценная жизнь онлайн» скорее понравится зрителям постарше. Это чудесная романтичная история об отношениях между геймерами, с тонким юмором и особой «жизой», которая хорошо знакома зрителям старше 30. В главной героине вы наверняка узнаете некоторых своих знакомых, а может, даже и себя. Отличный вариант, чтобы посмотреть с лучшей подругой или второй половинкой.

«Ты же любишь мамочку, удары которой бьют по площади двойным уроном?»

Старшеклассник Масато Осуки все свободное время проводит в различных MMORPG, а со своей мамой Мамако общается редко и «сквозь зубы». Так было до тех пор, пока однажды к ним в дом не пришла женщина из правительства и не предложила поучаствовать в бета-тесте некой онлайн-игры. Масато с радостью отправился в новый виртуальный мир, но вот проблема — его напарником стала собственная мать! Теперь по дороге приключений им придется идти вместе, и для Масато это грозит большим, очень большим стрессом.

Это самая странная комедия, которую я когда-либо смотрел. Сама по себе идея аниме про то, как дети играют в MMO со своими родителями, очень интересная. Из нее мог бы получиться хороший сюжет в любом жанре, но вот история Масато и Мамако свой потенциал совершенно не реализует. По задумке авторов, сериал должен рассказывать о сложных взаимоотношениях сына и матери, которые становятся ближе друг к другу с каждым выполненным квестом, поверженным боссом и т. д. На деле же получился набор очень странных шуток и двусмысленных гэгов, которые наверняка привели бы в восторг Зигмунда Фрейда, но вот обычного зрителя… Я честно пытался, но не смог осилить сериал целиком. Возможно, у вас получится?

«Ми-ми-ми-мишка»

Школьница Юна рано стала самостоятельной — она бросила школу и начала зарабатывать на бирже. А еще отправила своих родителей путешествовать по миру, чтобы те не мешали ей сутками играть в VRMMORPG. Однажды администрация игры прислала Юне сувенирную экипировку — костюм плюшевого медведя. Примерив его, девочка оказалась в виртуальном мире своей любимой игры. Вот здесь нелепый на первый взгляд костюм медведя пришелся ей как нельзя кстати, ведь он делал Юну практически неуязвимой.

Однозначно, это самое детское аниме из всего списка, но не могу сказать о нем ничего плохого. Легкий незатейливый сюжет, забавные персонажи и простой юмор — отлично подойдет для просмотра с детьми. Больше всего понравилась главная героиня, которая своими манерами и характером временами напоминает Джейсона Стэйтема. Если взглянуть на сюжет чуть внимательнее, то история Юны вовсе не про геймершу в костюме мишки, а про одинокую девочку, которая с помощью игры познает теплоту семейных отношений, учится быть заботливой старшей сестрой и хорошей подругой. Какого-то цельного сюжета здесь нет, но он и не нужен. Рекомендую смотреть в терапевтических целях, когда нужно разгрузить голову или поднять настроение.

«Нет игры — нет жизни»

Соре и Широ — брат и сестра из Японии, которые прославились на весь интернет как геймеры с безупречной репутацией. Он — гениальный стратег, она — непревзойденный тактик, а вместе они могут победить кого угодно в любой игре. Обычная жизнь для них скучна, потому что в ней не найти достойных соперников, но однажды ситуация изменилась. Некий незнакомец пригласил Соре и Широ в свой альтернативный мир, где профессиональные игроки могут жить как короли. В этом мире нет войн, а все спорные вопросы решаются только на игровых полях. Здесь запросто можно захватить соседнее королевство с помощью шахматной партии или удачного блефа в покере. Границы стран тоже зависят от результатов игр, и так получилось, что человеческая раса оказалась одной из слабейших на этой геополитической карте. Ну ничего, Соре и Широ быстро вернут ей былое величие.

Еще одно неплохое аниме про подростков-геймеров в альтернативном мире фэнтези. Радует, что на этот раз сценаристы придумали чуть более интересный сеттинг и придали сюжету большей интриги за счет важности игровых побед. К слову, Соре и Широ хоть и кажутся непревзойденными игроками, но на деле даже им приходится непросто. Авторы аниме специально создают для героев такие условия, чтобы победу нельзя было одержать привычным способом. В итоге даже самое простое с виду сражение превращается в серьезную головоломку и напряженную битву интеллектов. Сами отношения между Соре и Широ тоже заслуживают отдельного внимания, ведь на них держится весь юмор. Покровительственное поведение старшего брата часто резонирует с советами младшей сестры по общению с девушками, что приводит к нелепым и смешным ситуациям.
