The criteria for success are different, but if the film of 1982, which failed at the box office in the year of release, is filmed in the series “The Simpsons” and “South Park”, we can say that it was ahead of its time. The film crew of The Walt Disney Company was the first in the world to try to combine live filming and CGI and turned it brilliantly, although the picture as a result turned out to be incomprehensible to the mainstream viewer.

The camera work in the film is beyond praise: the specialists filmed it twice, working with frame-by-frame additions to each scene, because the level of technology development simply did not allow to realize all creative ideas on a computer. In fact, then there were no games about the virtual reality described in “Tron”; geeks who gathered for arcade machines in shopping centers only dreamed of it.

The film “Tron” looks in one breath, even despite the absurdity of the picture, and the release of the ideological continuation of “Tron: Legacy” proved that special effects do not always play a major role. The sequel received a budget of $ 170 million and demonstrated all the capabilities of CGI, but for many it became only a bridge to the 1982 film.

In Tron: Legacy, the Disney viewer showed the conflict between fathers and children, and also revealed the problems that can arise from immersion in virtual reality in the head. The moral of the film is not fully revealed, but the action movie is excellent.

The events of the movie “Gamer” take place in the distant future, in which some people can control others in a deadly reality show, reminiscent of a multiplayer shooter. The main expressive device in the picture is the cruelty to which people are drawn. The writers clearly wanted to demonstrate what could have happened if video games really affected people in the negative ways that some media outlets sometimes portray.

In the Gamer universe, life-sentenced criminals can get amnesty if they win the game enough times to top the world champion rankings. The main character John Tillman, played by Gerard Butler, is far from white and fluffy, but he still did not commit the crime for which he went to prison. Unlike many thugs, with whom he will face in “virtual” battle, he has something to strive for freedom for. However, his only chance to do so is to win by taking the lives of other people. This is a film about high-tech slavery and a game from which it is impossible to emerge victorious. And, of course, about love.

If you’re looking for an evening comedy with more action, jokes would suit both American Pie aficionados and Quartet I humor lovers, Pixels is the perfect option. And even the abundance of dirty jokes about big-breasted blondes and visual gags with pixel piss don’t make the film suck, perhaps due to the powerful cast led by Peter Dinklage and Adam Sandler, as well as high-quality special effects.

The main plot takes place in 2013, but first the viewer is told about the 1982 Donkey Kong tournament from Nintendo. In the best traditions of cinema, the “bad guy” wins it, thereby launching a chain of events that will lead to the invasion of Earth by very unusual pixel aliens, whose leader will be Pac-Man himself.

In the third installment of the Spy Adventure-Comedy Series, invented and directed by Robert Rodriguez, the Cortez family entered virtual reality. Unlike many films on this topic, here the computer world does not pretend to be real, but initially operates according to the laws of video games.

In the story, the title Game Over from the mysterious Cybergeny forces children to gut piggy banks and line up at the doors of shops. Standing behind the threshold of the nextgen release and seeing the news that the demand for consoles, according to forecasts, will be satisfied only by the spring, you begin to understand how all this is to the point. But “Spy Kids 3-D” came out in 2003!

If you didn’t cry as a child over the love story of Juni Cortez and his virtual girlfriend Demeter, then you don’t have a heart. Like any family movie, the adventures of a spy family will not reveal the secret of the third planet to you, but will help you to have fun. The main storyline is not related to the other Spy Kids episodes, but due to the large number of references it is better to start with the first one.

Prepare Player One is originally from Ernest Klein’s Ready Player One, which hit store shelves in 2011. And this is one of the few cases when we can say that the film is better. Never try to read it in Russian translation. The scriptwriters of the film slightly reworked the original, added much more action and complemented the idea of passing contests from the “admin” of the virtual universe.

Ready Player One is a challenge for all gamers. According to the plot, the main character is looking for an easter egg in the virtual world of OASIS, and each viewer can join this activity, studying the film adaptation itself. This is especially true of the final scenes, where in one second dozens of references to various games can flash before your eyes.

Many films about gamers are the fantasies of our contemporaries about virtual reality. Until technology has reached the level that is described in most paintings, but technical progress does not stand still. Perhaps films in the future will help to understand how to use the brave new world of lines of code, and how to avoid mistakes of movie characters.
